DETROIT — For the third time this season, Edgar Quero is the odd man out behind the plate.
On Saturday, the White Sox added Jake Rogers to the 26-man roster and optioned Quero to Triple-A Charlotte. The Sox claimed Rogers off waivers from the Red Sox on Friday and designated left-hander Joe Rock for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. He’s in the lineup and batting ninth. He’ll wear No. 28.
The Sox sent Quero down June 22 when Kyle Teel returned from injuries and Aug. 4 after they traded for Joey Bart. Quero was called back up when Teel sprained his ankle and then when Bart broke his hand.
Quero is hitting .208/.279/.262 with three home runs in 65 games this season. He has been hot lately, hitting .370 with a .933 OPS in his last eight games. But the Sox much prefer Drew Romo’s defense behind the plate, despite his lower production at the plate. Romo is hitting .132/.214/.285.
The Red Sox designated Rogers for assignment Tuesday. The 31-year-old, who also has played for the Tigers and Orioles this season, is hitting .183/.290/.327 with three homers in 42 games.
“Really good defensive catcher,” manager Will Venable said. “I think that you look at our catching unit and to be able to add depth is really important for us. [He’s] a guy who has had a lot of success in this league, really understands what it means to help a pitcher navigate a game, still productive against left-handed pitching.”
