In spring training, White Sox outfield prospect Braden Montgomery already had baseball immortality in his sights.
‘‘My overall goal is to make the Hall of Fame,’’ Montgomery told the Sun-Times on March 1. ‘‘I’ll take it a game at a time, and we’ll see what happens at the end of it.’’
The first game will be very soon. The Sox called up Montgomery, the club’s No. 2 prospect, on Tuesday before opening a three-game series against the Braves at Rate Field. They also recalled left-hander Joe Rock from Triple-A Charlotte, optioned outfielder Rikuu Nishida and right-hander David Sandlin to Charlotte and moved outfielder Austin Hays to the 60-day injured list.
Whenever he makes his major-league debut, Montgomery, 23, will be the 12th Sox player to do so this season. He’ll wear No. 24. General manager Chris Getz is expected to meet with the media Tuesday afternoon.
Montgomery wasn’t trying to be cocky when he spoke in March, but his confidence was quite evident. And it was music to manager Will Venable’s ears.
‘‘That’s awesome to hear,’’ he said then. ‘‘He’s one of those guys. If that’s what he thinks and that’s what he’s working for, you just want to support him so he can do that.’’
The Sox promoted Montgomery to Triple-A Charlotte on May 3 after he had a 1.035 OPS in 27 games at Double-A Birmingham. In 29 games with Charlotte, his OPS was .912. He’s the fourth (and final) player the Sox acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade with the Red Sox to make the majors.
Overall in the minors this season, Montgomery was slashing .314/.422/.548 (66-210) with 13 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, 41 RBI, 52 runs scored and 39 walks in 56 games. He made 31 starts in center field and 14 in right.
Mongtomery, whom the Red Sox drafted 12th overall in 2024 out of Texas A&M, came to the White Sox with second baseman Chase Meidroth (who’s starting), catcher Kyle Teel (injured list) and right-handed reliever Wikelman González (Triple-A injured list).
Mune, Miguel, Montgomery, Martin and more are making legitimate cases for trips to the Midsummer Classic in Philadelphia.

The Sox have landed on regulars across the infield and most of the outfield, but a reliable cast off the bench and in the bullpen is cementing their competitive run.
