White Sox’ franchise-record home losing streak hits 14

At this rate at the Rate, the White Sox will set more than just the modern-era record for losses in a season.

A 5-0 loss Tuesday to the Guardians at Guaranteed Rate Field was the Sox’ franchise-record 14th in a row — and 26th in their last 27 games — at home. That puts them on track to break the major-league record of 59 losses at home shared by the 1939 Browns and 2019 Tigers.

The Sox are 18-56 at the Rate and 33-113 overall, 80 games below .500 and within seven losses of the 1962 Mets’ record of 120. They need to finish 10-6 to avoid tying the Mets’ mark.

The Sox have lost 20 consecutive series and have been shut out 17 times.

Right-hander Jonathan Cannon was pulled with two runners on and one out in the sixth inning with the Sox trailing 1-0. Reliever Gus Varland promptly gave up a three-run home run to Lane Thomas to give the Guardians a 4-0 lead.

Guardians starter Ben Lively left the game after two innings after a line drive by Dominic Fletcher caromed off his right thigh toward first base for an out. Six relievers completed the shutout.

‘‘We didn’t really swing the bats,’’ interim manager Grady Sizemore said. ‘‘We had a few opportunities but didn’t make adjustments and get the hit when we needed it.’’

Burke to the future

Right-hander Sean Burke, a third-round draft pick in 2021, had his contract selected from Triple-A Charlotte and seems positioned for a start, possibly Sunday.

In his major-league debut, Burke tuned up with three innings of relief Tuesday. He struck out Bo Naylor to open a scoreless seventh and allowed an unearned run and three hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Burke’s error on a pickoff attempt of Steven Kwan in the eighth led to the unearned run.

‘‘It was unbelievable,’’ Burke said. ‘‘This is definitely the best day of my life. It’s something I’ve worked for since I picked up a baseball for the first time. It’s hard to put into words right now.’’

In 16 starts at Charlotte, Burke had a 4.63 ERA with 86 strikeouts and 36 walks in 64⅓ innings. In his last seven starts, he had a 3.66 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 32 innings.

Nastrini’s woes

Touted during spring training as a possible regular presence in the rotation, right-hander Nick Nastrini was sent to Charlotte after six starts.

When he returned, he pitched six innings of one-run ball against the Rangers on Aug. 29, then walked 10 batters spanning five innings in his next two outings, one in relief Monday. Nastrini, who has walked 36 in 35‰ innings, was sent back to Charlotte to make room on the roster for Burke.

Nastrini, who was acquired from the Dodgers in a deal at the trade deadline last season, will pitch out of the bullpen at Charlotte, ‘‘but he’ll still be in contention to start for us next year,’’ Sizemore said.

‘Everything clean’ for Thorpe

Right-hander Drew Thorpe, the top prospect acquired from the Padres for right-hander Dylan Cease during spring training, had surgery for a bone spur in his right elbow Friday.

‘‘Everything was clean in there, just kind of what we expected,’’ he said. ‘‘Good news.’’

Thorpe (5.89 ERA) had a 3.03 ERA in his first seven starts but was roughed up in his last two, allowing 14 runs in 5‰ innings, before going on the injured list. He expects to be throwing again in eight to 12 weeks.
