White Sox put Davis Martin on injured list, call up Jose Urquidy

DETROIT — The White Sox put right-hander Davis Martin on the 15-day injured list with a blister on his finger and sent Tanner McDougal back to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.

They also called up righty José Urquidy and lefty Tyler Schweitzer from Charlotte.

Martin developed the blister on his middle finger Thursday during the Sox’ 9-8 loss to the Reds. He blamed it and poor command for beaning the Reds’ Sal Stewart, which got him ejected in the third inning. Stewart had homered in the first, and the umpires deemed Martin intended to hit him after throwing up and in before grazing the bill of his helmet.

Martin has been struggling for weeks, going 1-5 with a 7.06 ERA in his last 13 starts. The first inning has been a particular problem lately. In his last four starts, he has allowed 15 runs in the first.

The Sox acquired Urquidy, who will wear No. 70, on July 26 from the Pirates for righty Félix Doroteo. In three starts with Charlotte, Urquidy has a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings. Combined with the Pirates’ Triple-A team in Indianapolis, he has a 3.48 ERA in 95 2/3 innings this season. Urquidy is in his seventh major-league season. His first five were with the Astros, for whom he pitched in the postseason each year.

He could see his first action tonight in the first of a three-game series against the second-place Tigers. Lefty Sean Newcomb will start a bullpen game for the first-place Sox, who could follow him with Urquidy.

McDougal, the Sox’ seventh-ranked prospect, made his major-league debut Thursday and allowed one run on three walks and a hit batter in one-third of an inning. Schweitzer has a 2.78 ERA in 22 2/3 innings over four stints with the Sox this season, his first in the majors. He has one save and 11 strikeouts in 11 relief appearances.

The last time the Sox visited Detroit, they lost three straight, two by one run. The last came after they blew leads in the eighth and 10th innings.
Stewart had homered off Martin in the first inning of the Sox’ 9-8 loss, but Martin’s control had been off.
It speaks to a different era, before streaming took hold, when we all watched TV and saw Chicago sports figures in local commercials. Now, they only seem to appear in those ubiquitous Akin Law ads.
The forecast calls for rain later this afternoon, so first pitch is now scheduled for 12:10 p.m.
