The White Sox recalled rookie right-hander David Sandlin from Triple-A Charlotte and will start him Friday night against the Royals. To make room, they optioned left-hander Joe Rock to Charlotte.
This is Sandlin’s second tour with the Sox this season. His first start in the big leagues was memorable. After allowing a leadoff homer to Byron Buxton, Sandlin retired the next 18 Twins, allowing the one hit and fanning four.
Predictably, he came back to earth in his second start, also against the Twins, in which he allowed eight runs in four innings. After his next outing, in which Sandlin allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings after an opener, the Sox sent him down.
In six starts with Charlotte this season, Sandlin, 25, is 1-0 with a 1.57 ERA and 26 strikeouts.
Rock, 25, had a 3.48 ERA in 10 1/3 innings with the Sox after being acquired in a trade with the Rays for minor-league infielder Oliver Dunn. Rock had 11 walks and 12 strikeouts in four relief appearances.
The Sox are tied for first place in the American League Central with the Guardians, from whom they took two of three this week.
