Wind advisory in place for Los Angeles County until Monday evening – gusts as high as 55 mph

Western Santa Monica Mountains Recreational area, Santa Susana Mountains, 5 Freeway corridor near Santa Clarita and Western San Gabriel Mountains/Highway 14 Corridor are the focus of a wind advisory released at 2:19 p.m. on Monday by the National Weather Service. The advisory is valid between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA said, “Northeast winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected.”

“Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result,” according to the NWS. “Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.”

Understanding high wind alerts

When it comes to high wind alerts, understanding the levels of risk is crucial. The NWS classifies them into three distinct categories:

High wind warning: Take action!

Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheel and slow down.

Wind advisory: Take action!

Strong winds are occurring but are not so strong as to warrant a High wind warning. Objects that are outdoors should be secured and caution should be taken if driving.

High wind watch: Be prepared!

Sustained, strong winds are possible. Secure loose outdoor items and adjust plans as necessary so you’re not caught outside.
