Wind advisory issued for Antelope Valley Foothills and Antelope Valley for Monday – gusts could peak at 45 mph

Western Antelope Valley Foothills, Eastern Antelope Valley Foothills and Antelope Valley are included in a wind advisory released by the National Weather Service on Sunday at 9:15 p.m. The advisory is valid for Monday, May. 12 between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.

The NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA says to expect, “Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected, except 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph in the foothills.”

“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Areas of blowing dust may temporarily restrict visibility,” the NWS said. “Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.”

High wind alerts: What each level signifies

When it comes to high wind alerts, understanding the levels of risk is crucial. The NWS classifies them into three distinct categories:

High wind warning: Take action!

Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheel and slow down.

Wind advisory: Take action!

Strong winds are occurring but are not so strong as to warrant a High wind warning. Objects that are outdoors should be secured and caution should be taken if driving.

High wind watch: Be prepared!

Sustained, strong winds are possible. Secure loose outdoor items and adjust plans as necessary so you’re not caught outside.
