Woman, 64, killed by stray bullet; man shot 41 times in Garfield Park murders

Police continue to seek the assailants who chased down and shot a man 41 times, with one of the bullets mortally wounding a woman walking across the street in a double murder late Wednesday morning in the Garfield Park neighborhood.

The 25-year-old man, who hasn’t yet been identified, parked his car in the 200 block of South Pulaski Road around 11:55 a.m. Wednesday when a black SUV parked in front of him about a minute later, and two gunmen exited and opened fire on the man, according to police reports obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.

The man then left his car and ran north on Pulaski Road through traffic, but he fell at the crosswalk about a block away, police said.

The gunmen caught up and stood over him as they continuously shot him, according to the police report. In total, he was shot 41 times in his chest and back, officials said.

The shooters then returned to their SUV and fled south before stopping nearby in the 4100 block of West Jackson Boulevard and firing more rounds, the report states.

A 64-year-old woman identified by family members as Joanne Perry was crossing the street at South Pulaski Road and West Jackson Boulevard when she was struck in the chest by gunfire, officials said.

Both the man and Perry were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where they were pronounced dead, police said.

Relatives told ABC7 Perry, a mother of six who was also a cancer survivor, was on her way to a nearby store when she was shot.

Shortly after the shooting, a woman lay on the ground in grief as police and bystanders gathered around her, moments after learning that Perry had been killed.

“They shot my momma,” the woman repeatedly said as residents and police officers tried to guide her from the street.

At least 40 fired shell casings were found in the 200 block of South Pulaski Road with an additional 21 casings found in the 4100 block of West Jackson Boulevard, police said. The man was believed to be the intended target.

The black SUV used by the shooters was recovered in a south alley in the 5400 block of West Harrison Street after it had been set on fire, police said. It was previously reported stolen.

No arrests have been reported.

Area 4 detectives are investigating.
