Woman accused of stabbing 7-year-old son in Rogers Park

A woman accused of stabbing her 7-year-old son, allegedly because he made a mess in their home, was ordered detained during a hearing Monday, prosecutors said.

Llovana Torres, 26, was arrested Saturday and charged with aggravated battery of a child under 13, Chicago police said. She was ordered detained at a hearing Monday.

Prosecutors said at about 8 a.m. Torres became frustrated with her 7-year-old son after he made a mess of their apartment in the 1700 block of West Touhy Avenue, which she had cleaned the night before.

Torres began striking her son, prosecutors say, and he hid in a cabinet under the sink. Authorities say Torres tried to grab the boy, and then she used a kitchen knife to poke into the cabinet, stopping when the child said “ouch,” prosecutors said.

She took her son, who was bleeding, to her mother’s apartment downstairs in the same building. Her mother told her to take the boy to the emergency room. Torres drove him to Evanston Hospital, prosecutors say.

The 7-year-old was then airlifted to Lurie Children’s Hospital for emergency surgery to repair a ruptured diaphragm and a stab wound that required multiple sutures. He remains hospitalized on a ventilator, according to prosecutors.

Torres was arrested at Evanston Hospital, where she told a receptionist that she had stabbed the child, prosecutors said.

After her arrest, she told police she did it because she was “trying to find” him inside the cabinet and accidentally stabbed him. Torres also allegedly told her mother to lie about what had happened to the boy.

Torres identified the knife for police and it was recovered at the scene.

She is due in court again June 13.
