A woman has been accused of pouring boiling oil mixed with chilli powder on her sleeping husband in India.

Dinesh, 28, was taken to intensive care following the alleged attack at his home in Delhi’s Madangir area on October 2.

The couple, who shared the property with their six-month-old daughter, had reportedly faced marital problems.

Dinesh reportedly awoke at around 3.15am to a burning sensation and his wife, Sadhana, standing over him.

She reportedly poured scalding hot oil on his torso and face before sprinkling red chilli powder onto the fresh burns.

Dinesh, a medical representative, claimed she threatened to pour more oil if he called for help.

He was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital after sustaining severe burns, local media reported.

Neighbours were alerted by Dinesh’s screams and rushed to the apartment, but Sadhana reportedly refused to open the door. The landlord’s family intervened, and the door was eventually opened.

Police have launched an investigation after receiving a medico-legal report from Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital.

Due to the severity of Dinesh’s injuries, he was later transferred to Safdarjung Hospital’s intensive care unit.

Residents of the building said the couple had moved in about seven months ago and had a history of domestic disputes.

Manju, a neighbour, said: ‘We moved to this house about two months ago.’

She added: ‘Later, we learned that the wife threw hot oil and chilli powder on her husband during a disagreement between the family on the upper level. That is all we are aware of.’

Another resident, Anjali, confirmed to local media that Dinesh had accused his wife of pouring hot oil and chilli powder on him.

Anjali, the landlord’s daughter, told India Today: ‘We heard Dinesh yelling the day of the incident. He was severely burned, and his wife wasn’t opening the door when we went upstairs.’

She added: ‘He insisted that his wife had doused him in hot oil and chilli powder. They had moved into our house around seven months ago.’

Authorities at Ambedkar Nagar police station have registered a case and are continuing their inquiry.

Police noted that the couple had been married for eight years and had previously faced marital issues that involved law enforcement, though they had reportedly reconciled before the incident.
