Woman shot in the head while riding in vehicle in Oakland

OAKLAND — A  20-year-old Fairfield woman was shot Tuesday night while she was a passenger in a vehicle driving in the Eastlake district, authorities said.

The woman was in stable condition at a hospital where she was being treated for a head wound, authorities said.  The driver, an 18-year-old Hayward man, was not injured, authorities said.

The shooting happened about  8:20 p.m.  Tuesday in the 700 block of International Boulevard.

The woman and man, whose relationship to the woman was not clear,  were driving eastbound when they later told police they heard gunfire and realized she had been wounded.

Police were trying to determine if the shots were fired from another vehicle or by someone standing on the street. The shooting caused the activation of a gunshot detection alert system.

The man drove the wounded woman to a hospital.

A motive for the shooting is under  investigation and police are also trying to determine if the two were the intended targets.  Police have not said why they think the two were in Oakland.

Anyone with information about the shooting may call investigators at 510-238-3426.
