World’s most popular apps hit by Amazon Web Services going down

App outages also include Ring and the PlayStation Network (Picture: Getty Images)

Amazon, Roblox, Snapchat, The New York Times’ Wordle and dozens of other websites and apps are down at the same time.

Downdetector shows disruptions began at around 7.30am, with hundreds of people saying apps are not working.

Other apps with reported outages include banking services Lloyds and Halifax, phone companies EE and Vodafone, video game Fortnite and the video chat app Zoom.

The cause of the blackout is unclear, but many of the applications operate on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud computing platform that lets people ‘rent’ servers without the need to buy physical computers or data centres. Two in 10 websites use AWS.

Duolingo says the language learning app is undergoing a ‘maintenance break’, while Worlde asks users to: ‘Please try again later.’
