Yaamava’ Resort & Casino is the best way to Vegas without going to Las Vegas

Only have one day that you can run away? Pack your bags for a jam-packed experience in the most Vegas-esque destination west of Nevada, Yaamava’ Resort & Casino at San Manuel.

Yaamava’ — the Serrano word for “spring” — symbolizes a rebirth, and the place had one of its own: Originally opened as a bingo hall by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians almost 40 years ago, in 2021 this Highland property underwent a major makeover and reemerged as a luxury resort with a 17-floor hotel featuring 432 guest rooms (including 127 suites).

The best part? This 21-and-over oasis is likely less than a two-hour drive from wherever you are in Southern California.

Who wants to be a millionaire?

While the bingo hall is relegated to history, for gamblers the winning fever burns hot as ever. Some even cash in big, from the Orange County resident who struck a $1.3 million jackpot on a $25 slot machine bet, to the man who celebrated his 44th wedding anniversary with a $1 million windfall — both now part of the Yaamava’ lore.

The casino has 7,200 slot machines, 150 table games and five exclusive high-limit rooms. But before you hit the casino floor, sign up for Club Serrano to earn rewards, get access to exclusive events, and become eligible to win a Porsche or a coveted Birkin bag. Only Club Serrano members get to spin to win up to $1,000 in free-play points. Serrano membership also is good at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Soothe your mind, body and soul

When you need respite from the thrill of the game, the “Forbes Travel Guide” five-star-rated Serrano Spa beckons. Unwind with a spa treatment before heading to your private pool cabana. (The pool is where you could meet fellow fans of the show you all have tickets to that night.)

Indulge in opulence at Pines Steakhouse

After you’ve gotten gussied up for the night back in your luxury suite, head to Pines Steakhouse to treat yourself to a dinner of dry-aged or prime-cut steaks, Bucatini Fra Diavolo, imported caviar, pasta made on-site, house-made craft sodas and Old Fashioneds inspired by literary giants like Mark Twain and J.D. Salinger.

Go all in and order a spirit from Collection 86, an exclusive selection of rare vintage spirits Wine Spectator recognized with the 2022 Award of Excellence. The stories behind the bottles — a cognac hidden from the Nazis in a barrel behind a wall during WWII and found 80 years later — make experiencing them akin to sipping a slice of history. You can also purchase premium hand-rolled cigars (some rumored to be favored by British royals).

After dinner, find your seat at the 3,000-seat Yaamava’ Theater, christened by the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2022. The rest of this summer’s lineup promises an array of performances from Ricky Martin, Robert Plant, Josh Groban, Chelsea Handler and more.

Sweet finale

Before you head back to wherever you came from, stop at Serrano Vista Cafe for the lemon ricotta buttermilk pancakes, a delicious reminder of your staycation as you bid farewell to Yaamava’.
