A drunk woman flew into a fit of rage and shattered a half pint glass across her former best friend’s face, a court has heard.

Ebony Jones, 26, attacked support worker Megan Smith after an argument about the sale of a dog at Emporium Snooker Club in Bargoed, Caerphilly in Wales.

Prosecutor Byron Broadstock told Newport Crown Court that Megan asked Jones to leave her alone but she decided to smash the glass over her head.

After the attack, Megan needed 36 stitches to her face and five more to her nose and required treatment from a maxillofacial surgeon.

Mr Broadstock said: ‘Previously they had been good friends but recently their relationship had taken a turn for the worse over a completely unrelated matter.

He said Megan’s memory was ‘a bit of a blur’ but she could recall Jones continuing to hit her.

‘Footage shows at least four strikes to the face. Miss Smith remembers the feeling of glass smashing.

‘When the glass hit her face it made a shattering sound.’

In a victim impact statement, Megan said the attack had left her with permanent scarring and she was now known as ‘Megan Scar’ around her hometown.

She said: ‘Following the assault my life has not been the same.

‘Ebony and I had been friends for years and had a very close relationship and treated each others’ families as our own – I can’t believe she assaulted me this badly.

‘Ebony has betrayed me in the worst possible way – she has ruined my life.

‘I just can’t believe she assaulted me. She was my best friend.’

The court heard Megan was a ‘shell of her former self’ and that it had impacted her relationship with her boyfriend, parents and friends.

Defending Jones, Emma Harris said she had suffered from mental health problems and was the sole carer for her two young children.

Jones admitted wounding with intent on the day she was due stand trial.

She was jailed for 30 months and handed a restraining order banning her from contacting Megan for 10 years.

Judge Hywel James told her: ‘Custody is required when in a public place an individual uses a glass to strike someone in the face, not once, but up to four times.

‘Such a sentence is partly a deterrent against such behaviour in public places.’
