49ers’ Brock Purdy Gives Credit to His Wife After ‘Dougie’ TD Celebration

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy said he often annoys his wife in the kitchen by hitting The Dougie dance.

But like the rest of the football world, tight end George Kittle was shocked when the normally tame Purdy hit The Dougie after scampering for a 3-yard touchdown on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

Purdy extended the Niners lead to 17-8 late in the third quarter with the run en route to a 26-8 victory over Shedeur Sanders and the Browns. He then hit the iconic dance inspired by rap legend Doug E. Fresh, to the amazement of teammate Kittle.

Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan on the QB’s TD Celebration

Purdy said postgame that the dance is his go-to move.

“I’ve always been able to Dougie,” he said. “I haven’t really done it publicly. My wife, she can tell you, I annoy her in the kitchen. That’s where I got my practice. I told the team, if we score we’re gonna have some fun and I’m gonna hit The Dougie. I got an (opportunity) to do it, so I did it.”

Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed postgame that Purdy was under a lot of pressure to pull off the celebration.

“I thought it was pretty good,” Shanahan said. “He told the team he was gonna do that if he scored. So he had pressure on him to do, he couldn’t let them down, so it was nice.”

What is The Dougie Dance?

The Dougie is a hip hop dance move characterized by swaying the body from side to side while running a hand through, or near, one’s hair.

The move originated in Dallas, Texas, taking inspiration—and its name—from similar dance gestures popularized by 1980s rapper Doug E. Fresh. It first gained attention when rapper Lil’ Wil released the 2007 local hit “My Dougie.” Later, a dancer known as C-Smoove in Southern California taught the routine to the group that would become Cali Swag District. The group went on to record “Teach Me How to Dougie” and film its music video in Inglewood, California, during the summer of 2009. The video and the dance subsequently gained widespread popularity.

Niners Remain Relevant in Division and Wild Card

Purdy added a passing touchdown in the second half to go with his rushing score. San Francisco had trailed 8–7 late in the first half, but ultimately spoiled Sanders’ home debut in Cleveland. All three 49ers touchdowns came on short fields — two following recovered turnovers and another set up by a 66-yard punt return from Skyy Moore.

Purdy finished 16-of-29 for 168 yards, scoring on a 2-yard keeper in the third quarter before hitting Jauan Jennings for a 7-yard touchdown in the fourth.

Christian McCaffrey contributed 74 scrimmage yards (53 rushing, 21 receiving) and a touchdown, with most of his production coming after halftime.

For Cleveland (3–9), Sanders went 16-of-25 for 149 yards and a touchdown, and was sacked three times.

San Francisco (9-4) remains relevant in the division and wild card races. They currently hold the No. 7 seed behind the Seattle Seahawks (8-3) and Green Bay Packers (8-3-1). The Los Angeles Rams (9-3) are currently leading the NFC West, despite losing to the Carolina Panthers (7-6) on Sunday.

The Niners have their bye week next then host the Tennessee Titans (1-11) week 15, Dec. 14.
