49ers’ Brock Purdy Sends Panthers Warning on Christian McCaffrey Before Showdown

The San Francisco 49ers are currently competing with the Los Angeles Rams (8-2) and Seattle Seahawks (7-3) in arguably the toughest division in the NFL this season. The storied franchise may be sitting at 7-4 coming into Week 12, but San Francisco has no margin for error moving forward if they intends to clinch a playoff spot in the NFC.

That said, the 49ers will head into a tougher-than-expected matchup against the Carolina Panthers, who surprisingly have a record of 6-5. Bryce Young and company have a shot at winning the NFC South division title, having only one more loss than Baker Mayfield‘s Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-4), meaning Monday’s game against the 49ers will be important for both Carolina and San Francisco.

Along with the 49ers needing every win they can get from here on out during the 2025 NFL season, superstar running back Christian McCaffrey will be facing his old team, which traded him to San Francisco, at Levi’s Stadium.

Whenever a player of McCaffrey’s caliber faces a team they once played for, the stakes are higher with a lot of motivation to make that team see what they’re missing. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was asked about McCaffrey facing the Panthers and whether the game has a bit more importance than usual.

“I know he’s going to bring it every game, no matter who it is,” Purdy said during media availability. “Being the team that traded him and stuff, I’m sure, Christian being the competitor that he is, he definitely wants to go out and compete his butt off, but I feel like that’s a question for Christian to answer.

“Knowing him and stuff, he’s going to have that chip on his shoulder for sure. I’m excited for him for sure.”

Purdy knows that his superstar teammate has probably had this game against the Panthers circled on his calendar, which could mean a dominant performance is on the horizon on the biggest stage of Monday Night Football.

Along with Purdy chiming in on McCaffrey facing his old team on Monday, the four-time All-Pro was also asked if this game against the Panthers is a bit more important than the others.

“I take every game seriously, and this one I also take very seriously,” McCaffrey said.

This was a classic deflection from an NFL superstar who doesn’t want the game to be all about him, facing the team that traded him. However, despite initially downplaying the game, he couldn’t help but admit that it is “very important” to him.

“Just to make it clear, it is important. I didn’t say it is not important. It’s a very important game to me. Just like they all are.”

“They really are all important, and I think if there’s any extra added emotion, just let that come naturally on game day, but any given Sunday, we’re unlike any other professional league where we have a limited amount of games and each one is unbelievably important.”

It’ll be interesting to see how McCaffrey performs against the Panthers, as it will not only be important for the veteran running back but also for the 49ers, who will be looking to secure their eighth win of the 2025 campaign.
