T
he San Francisco 49ers are 3-0 and are looking like a serious threat in the NFC through the early portion of the season. But a common theme for the 49ers during the Kyle Shanahan era has been the large number of injuries and in 2025, that problem continues to persist. In addition to Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and George Kittle being hurt, defensive end Nick Bosa tore his ACL in week three and will miss the rest of the season. And that is on top of quarterback Brock Purdy being injured– missing the last two games with a toe injury.
But the 49ers finally received some good injury news to start week four. On Monday, Sept. 23, ESPN insider Adam Schefter took to The Pat McAfee Show and revealed very promising news about Purdy’s return to play.
Purdy Sounds Good to Go for Week Four
The 49ers have been playing very well with Mac Jones under center, but after signing Purdy to a lucrative five-year contract extension this offseason, there is no quarterback controversy in San Francisco and the 49ers will roll with Purdy again once he is healthy. And his injury has progressed faster than expected, with Schefter saying that Purdy has a very good chance of being ready to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in week four.
“I think Purdy’s going to have a chance, a real chance, to go this week… I wouldn’t be surprised if Brock Purdy is back this week,” Schefter said.
Jones has revived his career with the 49ers so far and is playing very similar to how he did as a rookie when he was a Pro Bowl selection, but the 49ers want Purdy back. After all, he is the face of the franchise and for a team that is having the bad luck that they are with injuries, getting players back is a much needed spark.
49ers Injuries Keep Piling Up
Since Shanahan took over as the 49ers’ head coach prior to the 2017 season, the 49ers have had multiple seasons where they were top five in terms of being the most injured team in the league. But, in three of those seasons, the 49ers defied the odds and made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game, doing so in 2019 (Super Bowl LIV appearance), 2021 and 2022.
However, that does not mean that the bad luck has stopped for the 49ers. Already entering the season shorthanded and with a lot of questions at several positions, the injury woes that the 49ers have endured early in this season have forced them to really test their depth and rely on the younger guys that they drafted this season. Still looking for their sixth Super Bowl and the first under Shanahan after losing both Super Bowls that he coached them in, it is not ideal that a lot of their stars are out.
But football is all about the next man up and with their game against the Jaguars coming up, the focus will be on getting another win so that they can improve to 4-0. Kickoff for the game against the Jaguars is set for Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1:05 p.m. (PT) from Levi’s Stadium.
