49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Drops Truth Bomb on Ricky Pearsall’s Injury

The story of the San Francisco 49ers‘ 2025 campaign has been injuries, and while the team is gradually beginning to get healthier, several players are still recovering from injuries. One such guy is wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed on Friday will be out for the team’s Week 10 contest.

This will now be the sixth-straight game Pearsall missed with a lingering knee injury, and folks are beginning to wonder when he will return to the field. While Pearsall has been seen running sprints during San Francisco’s practices, Shanahan kept it real when discussing the second-year wide receiver’s status moving forward.

Kyle Shanahan Provides Blunt Ricky Pearsall Injury Update

Heading into the 2025 campaign, the Niners had high hopes for Pearsall. With Brandon Aiyuk missing the start of the season as he continues to recover from ACL and MCL tears he suffered last year, San Fran was anticipating being able to rely on Pearsall and Jauan Jennings to help keep the passing game chugging along.

The problem, as noted above, is that virtually everyone on the 49ers’ roster has been injured at one point or another this season. When Pearsall has played, he’s looked capable of leading San Fran’s passing game, catching 20 passes for 327 yards in four games. Of course, that doesn’t mean much if he can’t get on the field.

With another week of Pearsall missing practice in the books, folks are wondering what the deal is with his injury situation. Shanahan admitted that while Pearsall is making progress, he simply isn’t ready to return to action yet. And with San Francisco sitting at 6-3 heading into Week 10, it doesn’t have to rush the talented playmaker into action before he’s truly ready to return.

“He can’t play football,” Shanahan said of Pearsall on Friday. “He can run in certain speeds, but he hasn’t been able to hit his normal speeds that would allow him to come back. We don’t let people come back until they can hit their normal speeds before they got hurt or makes them susceptible to injury again, so we’re just waiting until he hits those markers.”

49ers Aiming to Earn Another Win Without Ricky Pearsall

At this point, the 49ers are used to playing shorthanded, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. The wide receiver room has been a revolving door of sorts this season, and that will continue in Week 10. Not only is Pearsall out, but Aiyuk still has yet to make his season debut, while Jacob Cowing and Trent Taylor are on injured reserve. That means Jennings, Kendrick Bourne, and Demarcus Robinson will be leading the way at this spot in Week 10.

When the Niners return to action, they will draw a tough matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. It’s worth remembering that San Fran handed L.A. a shocking upset defeat on Thursday Night Football in Week 5, but it’s clear the Rams are going to be motivated to extract some revenge in this game. Kickoff for this very important divisional clash is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
