49ers’ John Lynch Comments on How Long He Wants to Be General Manager

T

hrough the first 14 weeks of the 2025 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers are sitting pretty. Having a 9-4 record despite being in third place in the NFC West, the 49ers can control their own destiny if they win their remaining regular season games and climb up the NFC playoff standings. Missing the postseason last year after making the Super Bowl in 2023, the 49ers are hungrier than ever to get over the hump.

But throughout the John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan era, the 49ers have always been in the mix but have yet to seal the deal, making two Super Bowls but losing both. When Lynch and Shanahan were hired back in 2017, they were tasked with turning around a franchise that had not won a Super Bowl since 1994. And now, over eight years later, the 49ers are still searching for that sixth Super Bowl despite coming close so many times. Recently, Lynch discussed the 49ers’ present and future and how long he wants to be a general manager. And from Lynch’s response, it looks like he won’t rest until he brings home the gold.

Lynch Talks About How Long He Wants to Do This

When Lynch was hired to be the 49ers’ general manager, he came in with no front office experience. Retiring from the NFL during the 2008 season, Lynch immediately became a broadcaster and spent the following nine seasons in the booth for NFL on Fox. But when Shanahan started talking to the 49ers about becoming the head coach, Lynch garnered some interest in the general manager role and the rest was history. Now, three division titles and two conference championships later, Lynch is eager to bring a Lombardi Trophy back to the Bay Area in order to make his job more worthwhile.

“I came here to get something done, and that was kind of to help a really proud organization get back on track and win championships — compete and win championships,” Lynch said. “We’ve done the compete part. We haven’t won it. And when I get my mind set on something, I really want to see it come to fruition. And I’m having a really good time doing this right now. I will tell you the conclusion I have is I never thought I’d be here this long. … I don’t think I thought it’d be easier, but I probably thought we’d have a couple in our in our hip pocket by now; and that hasn’t happened. We’ve had good chances, but we haven’t paid them off. And so I’m committed to trying to pay this thing off having a good time. I feel excited about where our organization is at. And I think the arrow is pointing up.”

The 49ers came into this season with minimal expectations but now that they are in the thick of the playoff race, the franchise has their sights set on a new goal– winning the Super Bowl in their home stadium. If the 49ers continue to play how they have been, then anything is possible.

Lynch’s Career as a General Manager

Hired as the general manager in 2017, Lynch turned a team that went 2-14 in 2016 into a 13-win team by 2019, with the 49ers earning their first trip to the Super Bowl since 2012 that year. After six seasons of turning the 49ers around, Lynch earned a promotion in 2022– adding president of football operations to his job title. Now, Lynch will look to keep the 49ers focused in their quest for another Lombardi.
