After the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Carolina Panthers 20â9, a post-game scuffle broke out involving Jauan Jennings and Panthers safety Treâvon Moehrig.
At first glance, it appears that Jennings threw a punch at Moehrig. At least that is what the national broadcast picked up. However, closer review shows that Moehrig initiated the altercation by throwing the first punches, including shots aimed at Jenningsâ groin.
It’s unclear if Moehrig or Jennings will face any punishments from the NFL.
Kyle Shanahan Said He Was ‘Proud’ of Jennings
When asked after the game about Jenningsâ actions, head coach Kyle Shanahan kept his response straightforward: Moehrigâs behavior crossed the line, and any retaliation Jennings delivered was justified.
“The guy took a cheap shot and hit him in the balls,” Shanahan said. “I was real proud of Jauan for not losing his mind out there.”

Jennings also expressed no regret for his part in the altercation. He described Moehrigâs behavior as childish and said his own actions were simply a response.
âI was just responding to some childish behavior,â he said.
For his part, Moehrig didnât show much remorse either, claiming Jennings had been making dirty plays throughout the game and that he reacted in the only way he felt he could. He did, however, acknowledge that discipline is likely coming and indicated heâll accept whatever consequences follow.
“There really isn’t much to it. He wanted to do a little dirty stuff,” Moehrig said. “So it is what it is.”
Brock Purdy, Niners Offense Struggled Against Panthers
Jennings finished the game with 41 yards on five catches and a touchdown. He pulled in his touchdown pass from Brock Purdy early in the first quarter, before the Niners struggled most of the rest of the game to score more points.
Purdy didnât look any sharper in his second start since returning from a toe injury, becoming the first player this season to throw three interceptions in a single first half. He insisted afterward that neither the toe nor any lingering rust played a role.
âHonestly, the decisions of going to those spots, I was fine with,â he said. âItâs just the execution of throwing a better ball. I feel like on really all of them, I needed to just drive the ball a little bit more. I kept it up in the air too long on multiple of them.â
After Purdyâs rough start, the 49ers shifted to a more conservative approach in the second half, leaning heavily on Christian McCaffrey and short, controlled passes. The adjustment paid off: McCaffrey capped a drive with a 12-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 17â3, and Matt Gay later added a field goal to extend the advantage.
As much as the 49ers struggled on offense, Carolina struggled more, never reaching the end zone. This was a reunion game for McCaffrey, who hadn’t played Carolina since he was traded from the organization to San Francisco in 2022.
The 49ers are on the road next week, playing Shedeur Sanders and the Cleveland Browns.
