49ers LB Fred Warner Shares Major Update on Injury Recovery

The San Francisco 49ers have managed to enjoy a strong 2025 campaign so far, despite dealing with a rash of injuries. Among the guys who are on the shelf for the rest of the season is superstar linebacker Fred Warner, as he suffered a broken and dislocated ankle back in the team’s Week 6 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Given the serious nature of Warner’s injury, it wasn’t much of a surprise to find out that he would not play again in 2025 after going down against the Bucs. Since then, Warner has been attacking his injury rehab in the hopes of being ready for the start of the 2026 season, and he recently shared a big update regarding his progress.

Fred Warner Issues Encouraging Injury Update

During the 49ers’ recent run of success, Warner has turned himself into one of the most impactful middle linebackers in the league. Since 2020, Warner has earned four Pro Bowl and First Team All-Pro selections each, solidifying his status as the heart and soul of what has been a perennially dominant defense.

Of all the injuries San Fran’s defense suffered, the loss of Warner was perhaps the most crushing of the bunch. Warner is a three-down linebacker who is one of the best tacklers in the league, and he can also hold up in coverage against whoever he finds himself lined up against in the passing game. Simply put, it seemed tough to envision the 49ers staying afloat without Warner.

To this point, though, the Niners have managed to stay in the loaded postseason race in the NFC, even without Warner on the field. Behind the scenes, Warner has been grinding through his injury rehab, and he recently revealed that he will take a big step in his process next week, as he will get to shed the boot he’s been forced to wear ever since undergoing surgery.

“We’re at a little over five weeks post op,” Warner shared on “Real Ones: The League.” “We got a huge, huge day coming up … I finally get to take my boot off. I’ve been wearing that boot ever since my surgery. Next Tuesday … I get to take my boot off and finally get off this scooter.”

Losing a player like Warner is never easy, but considering how the past two seasons have gone now, this is something that the 49ers are getting used to dealing with. This team simply cannot find a way to stay healthy, and yet, they still have an 8-4 record heading into their Week 13 matchup with the Cleveland Browns.

Being down guys like Warner and fellow defensive superstar Nick Bosa is obviously going to make things more difficult for San Francisco, but this team has proven it is going to have a shot to win any time it takes the field, no matter who is on the field. The Niners will look to earn win No. 9 when they take the field against the Browns at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
