49ers Legend’s Son Reveals What His Dad Sent Him Before His First TD

Fans of nostalgia in the Bay Area are delighted as there is another Owens catching touchdowns for the Niners.

Terique Owens, son of NFL legend Terrell Owens, caught his first touchdown pass for the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 23. It was a preseason matchup between the Niners and Los Angeles Chargers, but for sentimental value, let’s say it counts.

The younger Owens said he received a little motivation from the elder Owens headed into the final preseason game.

Terrell Owens Sent Son, Terique, Video of First NFL Touchdown

Vic Tafur, senior writer with The Athletic, said on X that Terrell sent his son a video of his first career touchdown, with an accompanying message.

“He said he was ready for my first one,” Terique said, according to Tafur.

And Terique delivered, scoring a 22-yard touchdown pass from Carter Bradley in the Niners 30-23 preseason win over the Chargers.

“It’ll be a crazy feeling to call him and talk about it,” Terique said after the game.

“He didn’t call it, but he was just like, ‘I’m ready for yours.

“It’s kind of crazy I got mine tonight. I never would’ve expected it would be tonight, but I was ready for the opportunity.”

It’s Been a Long Journey for Terique Owens

At one point it didn’t seem possible that Terique would be making plays in the NFL at 25 years old. He did not begin playing football until his sophomore year of high school in Oakland.

He first attended Contra Costa College, then Florida Atlantic and finished at Missouri State. In his last year, he caught 28 passes for 528 yards.

He joined the Niners last season during training camp but was waived before re-signing with the team’s practice squad. He has never played in a regular season NFL game.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling when I think about my path to get here,” Owens said while standing with the game ball at his locker. “I started playing football late and had a long journey just to get here and get these opportunities, and I made the most of it. It’s an unbelievable feeling.”

Terique Owens Long Shot to Make Niners Roster

The Niners, like every NFL team, must trim down their 90-man rosters to the regular season limit of 53 by Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. EDT.

Terique is a long shot to win a spot, but he may remain on the Niners’ practice squad.

“I’m going into it knowing that I gave everything I got,” Terique said. “I feel like I put my best foot forward and I’m ready for whatever decisions are made.”

Terique caught two passes for 39 yards and the touchdown during the preseason.

The Niners currently have 12 receivers on the roster: Junior Bergen, Robbie Chosen, Jacob Cowing, Russell Gage Jr., Isaiah Hodgins, Jauan Jennings, Skyy Moore, Terique Owens, Ricky Pearsall, Demarcus Robinson, Malik Turner and Jordan Watkins.
