The San Francisco 49ers got more than a backup quarterback when the signed Mac Jones.
Jones opened up about his toughness after the 49ers raved about the quarterback’s ability to persevere through injuries.
Jones, the 15th overall pick of the New England Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft, is in his first year with the Niners and was brought in as an insurance policy for franchise QB Brock Purdy. Jones has stepped right in as Purdy has battled turf toe and is 5-2 with a 67.2 completion percentage and a 10-5 touchdown-to-interception rate.
Jones may be relegated to the backup quarterback spot when the 49ers (6-3) host the Los Angeles Rams (6-2) at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday.
High Praise From Teammates ‘Means A Lot’ To Mac Jones
Future Hall of Fame tackle Trent Williams has raved about Jones, saying he doesn’t “act like a quarterback.” Jones took that as high praise.
âTrentâs one of the toughest to play. He doesnât miss a lot of games and heâs played forever and is going to be a Hall of Famer,” Jones said. “So just being in the huddle with him has been awesome. And like I said, I just want those guys to have respect for me and I have respect for them and weâre going to go out there and go to battle.
âIt means a lot. Thatâs a big reason why I play, to be honest is to get the respect of people that I trust and people that I would take an opinion from. So, I try to show that every day. I have to continue to do that. Itâs not a one game thing, so I want to show it for the whole season, and thatâs my goal.â
Jones has battled his own array of injuries this season, since he has been hampered by oblique and knee injuries, which initially put him on the Niners’ injury report this week.
But Jones admitted he has felt hits this season. He has been trying to put on a brave face, even while trying to get up faster after getting hit.
âThis year just dealing with some stuff, so just trying to get up quick is always my goal, but theyâre really tough guys,” Jones said. “So I think they donât stay down long, so maybe I should be more like them.â
Mac Jones Has Learned From His Year With the 49ers
Jones has resurrected career, which had taken a huge hit after he was traded from New England to the Jacksonville Jaguars then was let go as Trevor Lawrence’s backup.
So Jones spoke about how he has grown while with the 49ers this year.
“Anybody in their profession, theyâre going to look at themselves and see what they can do better,” Jones said. “So, Iâve tried to do that and my goal is to, I always talk about, be consistent every day and donât be complacent with good results or bad results, just stick to your process. Iâve gone through a lot and a lot of people have gone through a lot, so itâs all about moving forward and really excited for this game coming up.â
