It sure sounds like the New York Jets are going to move on from players ahead of the NFL trade deadline, currently sitting at 0-7. It’s been a horrid year for the Jets, but it could help teams like the San Francisco 49ers, considering the number of injuries they’ve dealt with. The 49ers lost Fred Warner to a season-ending injury, with a dislocated and broken ankle.Â
When examining ways to replace him potentially, USA Today’s Jack McKessy proposed a trade idea for the Jets to send linebacker Quincy Williams to the 49ers, citing that he could replace Warner in the loaded 49ers defense when it’s at its best.Â
âThe 49ers lost star linebacker Fred Warner for the season with a dislocated and broken ankle. Second-year Tatum Bethune has held his own so far after being thrust into the starting role, but the 49ers could always use more depth.
âOnce he returns from a shoulder injury, Williams would provide San Francisco with an extra veteran presence in the middle of its defense in Warner’s absence. Though he doesn’t have the four-time All-Pro reÌsumeÌ Warner does, Williams was a first-team All-Pro in 2023. And if the 49ers still prefer to have Bethune develop in the middle linebacker spot, Williams could bolster either of the other inside linebacker spots, currently occupied by Dee Winters and Luke Gifford,â he wrote.
Will the Jets Trade Away a Key Piece?
Reports of the New York Jets moving on from Williams don’t come out of the blue, with Jordan Schultz reporting earlier on Thursday that he expects teams to make calls, and that he was one of the names mentioned as a potential candidate to be moved.Â
For the San Francisco 49ers, they’ll have to hope that’s the case.Â
âTeams are keeping an eye on the #Jets ahead of the trade deadline: names being mentioned include Breece Hall, Quincy Williams, Jermaine Johnson II, Will McDonald IV, Michael Carter II, and Allen Lazard, among others, per sources,â he wrote.
According to Schultz, a source told him that Aaron Glenn, the Jets head coach, unlike the 49ers with Kyle Shanahan, are trying to find players who fit what they’re looking to build.
âThereâs an element of trying to figure out who are Glennâs guys and who arenât. Remember when Detroit suddenly traded Hockenson? A building block from the last regime is not going to be a guaranteed building block in this one.â
Will the 49ers Make An Offer the Jets Can’t Pass On?
While it seems likely, the San Francisco 49ers may not have an opportunity to trade for Williams, depending on how things unfold over the next week or so. According to Connor Hughes of SNY, some of the New York Jets’ decisions could change if the team plays well in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals.Â
âTeams call/continue to call on guys like Breece Hall, Jermaine Johnson, Will McDoanld, Michael Carrer, Quinnen & Quincy Williams, but thatâs the vibe theyâre getting from conversations.Â
âSome league sources wonder if there will be more willingness from Jets to give in negotiations if they fall to 0-8 with a loss to the Bengals. Thatâs to be seen,â he wrote.
Williams is currently dealing with an injury and hasn’t played since Sept. 21, but he’s been great in previous years, posting 95 tackles in 2023 and 74 in 2024.
