There is no NFL team that is as injured as the San Francisco 49ers after week six of the 2025 season. Even their “healthy” players are battling through some sort of ailment. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings revealed after Sunday’s 30-19 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that he is playing through five broken ribs and both a high and low ankle sprain.
Jennings revealed that he broke his ribs during the 49ers week four game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He didn’t specify when he sustained his ankle injury, but it has been listed on San Francisco’s injury report since week three, meaning it likely came in week two.
“Playing with injuries is just something that’s a part of it,” Jennings said. “High, low ankle sprains, shoulders, got five broken ribs, it is what it is. You keep playing, nobody cares, you keep playing. That’s what we do.”
“It’s football, I love pain,” Jennings continued. “I wouldn’t be playing this sport if I didn’t. You got to enjoy every little thing that comes with it and pain is one of those.”
Jennings Limited to Three Targets Sunday
Though he lined up for 77 percent of the 49ers offensive snaps during their loss to the Buccaneers, Jennings caught just one pass for seven yards on three targets Sunday. Whether the low target count is coming from the coaching staff limiting him or Mac Jones deciding not to throw the ball his way because he knows he’s injured, those broken ribs and sprained ankle are certainly limiting Jennings’ ability to be effective.
After being targeted 15 times in the first two weeks, Jennings missed weeks three and five and only has three receptions in his last two games.
Jennings came into the season expected to be one part of a two-headed deep threat tandem with Ricky Pearsall, but has been limited for a month now while Pearsall has missed the last two weeks with a knee injury.
49ers Unable to Eke Out Road Victory
Mac Jones came back down to earth on Sunday, throwing two interceptions in San Francisco’s loss to the Buccaneers. Jones had gone for six TD’s and just one INT through three games before Sunday, and though he threw for 347 yards, his two turnovers cost San Francisco. His second interception came in the fourth quarter as he was leading the Niners down the field down by eight points. On a target to Jennings, Jones was intercepted by Jamel Dean of the Buccaneers, nullifying any momentum San Francisco had.
To add insult to injury, the 49ers also lost star linebacker Fred Warner on Sunday, as his ankle got twisted up in a teammate’s tackle. San Francisco announced that he will miss the remainder of the season with a dislocated ankle.
The 49ers had a whopping 18 players on their week six injury report, a number that will likely remain similar heading into their week seven matchup with the Atlanta Falcons.
They’ll host Atlanta on Sunday Night Football with kickoff set for 8:20 p.m. on Oct. 19.
