$50 Million Contract Extension Predicted for Key Bills Starter

Even with their 23-20 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football in Week 5, the Buffalo Bills remain one of the top teams in the NFL early in the 2025 campaign. Superstar quarterback Josh Allen deserves a lot of the praise, and rightfully so, but he isn’t the only reason for the Bills’ success.

A big reason Allen is able to do what he does under center is because of the offensive line in front of him, which is one of the top units in the league. One part of that group is starting left guard David Edwards, and with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, he’s been predicted to earn a major new deal in the near future.

David Edwards Predicted to Earn $50 Million Contract from the Bills

Edwards broke into the NFL as a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft with the Los Angeles Rams. He quickly earned a starting job on the offensive line midway through his rookie season, and he helped Los Angeles defeat the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. After suiting up in just four games in 2022 due to complications from a concussion, Edwards departed and signed with the Bills in free agency ahead of the 2023 season.

In his first year with his new squad, Edwards ended up being used as a backup interior offensive lineman, as he didn’t start in any games for the first time in his career. That changed in 2024 when he earned the starting left guard job, and he ended up putting together one of the best seasons of his career.

Through five games, Edwards has reprised his role as a starter on the o-line, and he has continued to solidify himself as one of the top interior linemen in the league. There’s no doubt that Buffalo is going to want to keep Edwards in town if he stays healthy and keeps performing at this level, which led to him being predicted to receive a three-year, $50 million contract extension in the near future.

“Edwards is a pending free agent, doesn’t allow sacks, and protects Allen’s blindside while also boasting one of the best run-block metrics in the league,” Michael Ginnitti wrote for Spotrac. “The math says Edwards could be in line for $20M per year going forward, but a 3-year extension at around $50M probably fits the bill.”

Should the Bills Hand David Edwards a $50 Million Contract Extension?

With teams across the NFL intent on protecting their quarterbacks as much as they can, that has made offensive linemen more valuable than ever before. Tackles typically earn larger deals than guards and centers, but if you can hold up well against the run and the pass, you can earn a nice chunk of change as an offensive lineman, no matter what position you play.

Edwards isn’t necessarily the flashiest player in the league, but he consistently gets the job done, and he’s cemented himself as a strong fit alongside the rest of the Bills’ o-line. Getting him for a price of $50 million over three years would likely be considered a win for Buffalo, and while they’ve got bigger fish to fry currently, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them lock up Edwards on a new long-term deal at some point in the near future.
