76ers Make Concerning VJ Edgecombe Announcement vs Spurs

As the Philadelphia 76ers battled against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, March 3, the Sixers lost their rookie star VJ Edgecombe to an injury.

Late in the first half, Edgecombe took a hard fall. After going back to the locker room and getting checked out before the start of the third quarter, the Sixers made the final call on his status for the night.

The team announced that Edgecombe would not return to the action. He was ruled out due to lower back soreness, the team says.

Edgecombe’s night ended after 20 minutes of action. The rookie shot 2-9 from the field and missed both of his three-point attempts. He produced six points. Along with his scoring, Edgecombe had four rebounds, one assist, one steal, and two blocked shots.

Despite just being in year one, Edgecombe has been one of the Sixers’ most reliable players this season from a health and performance standpoint.

Leading up to Tuesday’s action against the Spurs, Edgecombe appeared in 56 games. He started every matchup he played in, seeing the court for 35.4 minutes per game.

The young star guard has been producing 15.5 points per game, while shooting 43% from the field, and knocking down 36% of his threes.

Along with his scoring, Edgecombe is coming down with 5.6 rebounds per game, while dishing out 3.9 assists, and coming up with 1.5 steals per game.

The Sixers acquired Edgecombe out of Baylor during the 2025 NBA Draft. After a disappointing year, the Sixers managed to keep their lottery selection away from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

With some luck in the drawing, the 76ers ended up with the third pick. So far, their decision to take Edgecombe looks like a home run pick through year one.

Following what’s turning out to be a blowout loss for Philadelphia, the Sixers won’t get much time to rest and recover.

On Wednesday, March 4, the Sixers are scheduled for a matchup against the Utah Jazz. Suddenly, Edgecombe’s availability for that matchup comes into question.

The Sixers haven’t played without the rookie much this season. He missed three games in a row back in November, before returning to the court for the November 30 matchup against the Atlanta Hawks.

Since then, Edgecombe has just one absence: a December 23 matchup against the Brooklyn Nets.

The Sixers are dealing with quite a few injury concerns as they close out a back-to-back set. Heading into the Spurs matchup, the team had already ruled out the veteran star, Joel Embiid. He’s dealing with an oblique injury.

Beyond Embiid, the Sixers also ruled out Kelly Oubre, who is dealing with an illness. Philadelphia remains without Paul George as well. The veteran forward continues to serve his suspension, which will conclude later this month.

The Sixers will tip-off against the Jazz at 7:30 PM ET on Wednesday.
