The New York Jets’ defense was historically inept against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15.
Head coach Aaron Glenn was asked after the game if he would consider taking play-calling duties away from defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
“Uhm, I knew that question was going to be asked. Listen, I brought Wilks in for a reason, and I want him to run his system. We have three games left. Three games left for our guys to go out there and play. I’ll tell you this, right now it’s not about the X’s and O’s across the board, it’s about the character of the men on this team. That is what I’m going to be evaluating … Evaluating the coaches, also like I always do. Starting with myself, the coaches, and the players on evaluations,” Coach Glenn explained.
The Jets lost 48-20 to the Jaguars in Week 15. The Jets’ defense gave up 24 first downs, 438 total net yards, and the Jags averaged 7.4 yards per play on offense.
Social Media Explodes Over Wilks’ Future With the Jets
“Safe to say DC Steve Wilks should be one & done again,” ESPN NFL analyst and longtime former player Damien Woody posted on social media.
NFL media personality Dan Hanzus shared a “Crazy stat via @RichCimini: Jets DC Steve Wilks has been one-and-done coach in his last five jobs. As Trevor Lawrence detonates New York, expect that streak to continue.”
ESPN radio host Jake Asman said, “Aaron Glenn is not a serious coach if he doesn’t fire Steve Wilks the moment the Jets season ends.”
Scott Mason of Play Like A Jet said, “Steve Wilks is toast. Doubt AG does it before the season ends but Jets won’t be bringing Wilks back next season.”
NYJ Matt asked, “What does Steve Wilks and the Jets defense do during the week? Or is this personnel just so bad it doesn’t even matter?”
“Does Steve Wilks survive the plane right back to New Jersey? Aaron Glenn should be calling plays for the final 3 games, or allowed someone like Chris Harris to do it. Just an embarrassing product,” Jets analyst Dylan Tereman said on X previously Twitter.
Coach Glenn Should Let Wilks Go Down With the Ship
The Jets’ season is over at 3-11. There are three games left to play to make that official.
Wilks is clearly in over his head and isn’t long for this job. What good comes of firing Wilks three weeks before the end of the season?
Outside of quenching the bloodlust among the fan base, it does nothing.
If Glenn takes over play-calling and it immediately changes for the better, he will face criticism for not having done it sooner. If he takes over and the problems persist, it will raise questions about his defensive acumen.
It’s a lose-lose situation. When a season like this comes along, you need a fall guy. Wilks is an easy contender for that label, considering all of the issues on the defensive side of the ball this season.
After the season is over, it would make sense for Glenn to throw the blame on Wilks, fire him, and then try to do a much better job of hiring a replacement.
Let Wilks finish off the year, show him respect, and then throw him out the door the moment the season ends.
