A’ja Wilson Becomes Fastest Player to Reach 5,000 points, Gives Nod to Princess and the Frog

The Las Vegas Aces captured its seventh win of the season after eclipsing the Connecticut Sun 85-59 behind a historic night from A’ja Wilson.

Wilson made history on June 25 by becoming the fastest player to reach 5,000 points. She reached this milestone in her 238th game, dethroning Breanna Stewart (242), Diana Taurasi (243), and Angel McCoughtry (257).

The two-time WNBA champion entered the June 25 matchup seven points shy of breaking the record. She broke the record by catching the ball at the three-point line and driving to the lane, finishing with her left hand at the rim with less than four minutes left in the second quarter.

“It meant a lot to me, uh, it’s been a special special season for us. It’s been a lot of ups and downs, uh, but when you can hit a milestone like this in a league like this, uh, I can’t let it go unnoticed,” said Wilson.

Princess And The Frog

Wilson captured 5,000 points in her custom signature shoe Princess Tiana” A’Ones. She paid homage to her favorite movie while discussing her historic night.

“I’m so happy I got to do it in my Princess Tiana, Princess and the Frog is my favorite movie, so I got a chance to do it in these shoes,” said Wilson.

“It’s my first time ever like writing something on shoes but I’m definitely going to cherish this moment uh, because it’s been a lot of fun but obviously we got a lot of work to do, so back at it tomorrow.”

“Oh yeah, I just wrote 5k and the date, so I can always remember so I’m not going to wear these anymore, I have a bunch of pairs but yeah it’s special. That’s one of my favorite movies and she’s my favorite Disney princess.”

A Walk Around the Sun

The South Carolina legend’s historic night came full circle as she broke the record against the Sun. She also scored her first WNBA points against Connecticut when she entered the league in 2018.

“It’s truly a special moment, I literally remember my first point was just a weird funky ball rolling on the floor and I grabbed it and I just kind of tossed it up there, um to think about that at Conn to now um winning at Conn to now here, um it’s been truly truly special,” said Wilson.

“I’m so grateful to be able to play in this league against great talent every single night that makes me work hard push hard uh, but when you can get them out something like this like I said it’s a blessing.”

Wilson finished the game with 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals while shooting 50% from the field. This season, the 28-year-old is averaging 21.2 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists (career-high), and 2.1 steals (career-high).

Las Vegas is on a two-game winning streak and is at .0500 with a 7-7 record. Right now, the team is seventh in the standings and looks to extend their streak against the Washington Mystics on June 26 at the Michelob ULTRA Arena.
