Ajax will demand a fee in the region of €50million (£44m) for Jurrien Timber this summer with Manchester United and Liverpool both keen on the defender.
The Netherlands international was one of Erik ten Hag’s early transfer targets at Old Trafford following his arrival last May as he sought to raid his former club.
The 21-year-old turned down the move however amid concerns he would not have the starting role he has had at Ajax.
Louis van Gaal, who was in charge of the Netherlands national side last year heading into the World Cup, had warned his players must be playing week-in, week-out for their respective clubs, with Timber opting to remain in his homeland for another season.
United instead turned to his defensive partner Lisandro Martinez, who has been a huge success at the club since his arrival from Ajax.
More upheaval is expected at Old Trafford this summer and with Harry Maguire possibly on the move with Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Azel Tuanzebe all set to leave, another centre-half could be brought in.
United interest in Timber remains with Liverpool also interested in his services, with his partner recently spotted house hunting in the Merseyside area.

While there have been no concrete offers as of yet, Ajax will be looking for another big fee this summer with Sky Germany reporting €50million is the current asking price.
Timber has made no secret of his desire to move on this summer and recently revealed Ajax have agreed to let him for the right price this summer.
‘A transfer is getting closer and closer, so to speak. There is a lot of concrete interest and I have made agreements with Ajax,’ he said.
‘Last year Ajax asked me to stay for at least one more season and to extend my contract. As a club boy I did that with love and after the season we will review the situation.’
He added: ‘At the Dutch national team, I often talk to boys who play football abroad. I want to take that step someday. But when that is, you will eventually hear and it will happen in consultation with Ajax.
‘I’m still here anyway and I’m in no hurry. The focus is now on the cup final and the remainder of the competition.’
