Alex Bregman Predicted to Sign $135 Million Deal with AL Contender

As the calendar gets closer to turning into December, MLB’s free agency is expected to start heating up. The Detroit Tigers are a team that’s expected to be active in the player market, and a recent prediction has them making a big splash this offseason.

Last offseason, the Boston Red Sox went out and signed Alex Bregman to an extension, but the deal included opt-out clauses, which Bregman has decided to exercise, and is now a free agent. His sweepstakes are one of the biggest storylines in MLB this winter.

Tigers Predicted to Make Big Splash for Alex Bregman

In a recent Bleacher Report article by Tim Kelly, Alex Bregman is predicted to sign a five-year, $135 million deal with the Detroit Tigers, in what would be a huge surprise across MLB:

“Contract Prediction: Five years, $135 million”

“Team Prediction: Tigers”

“He wound up getting a three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox, one that included opt-outs after both 2025 and 2026. A right quad strain did limit him to 114 games in 2025, but he nonetheless performed so well when healthy that it was a no-brainer for him to opt out and return to the open market.”

One may think that Bregman would be hesitant to sign with the Tigers because of their massive field, but Kelly outlines in his prediction piece that Alex Bregman has actually been a slightly better hitter on the road in his career, which suggests he hasn’t been a full beneficiary of playing in Houston and Boston.

Bregman was named an All-Star for the third time in his career this summer, and he finished the season with 18 home runs, a .273 average, and an OPS+ of 128. His upside includes being able to hit 30+ home runs in a season, but he’s consistently been around 20-25 throughout his career. The 31-year-old third baseman is also a doubles machine, which is why his slugging percentage has been over .440 in four straight seasons.

How Signing Alex Bregman Helps Detroit

The Detroit Tigers are a team with World Series aspirations in 2026. Despite having All-Stars across the diamond, they are thought to need help on the left side of the infield.

Detroit also has a tough decision to make with Gleyber Torres. If they are unable to retain Torres, signing Bregman seems even more likely.

With back-to-back CY Young Tarik Skubal leading the pitching staff, Detroit’s championship window is now, and if they want to get to the Fall Classic, having a strong offseason is the first step to doing so.
