It’s an incredible feat for Alyssa Thomas to accomplish in her WNBA career. Her willingness to be active in all areas of the court speaks volumes as one of the best players in the league.

Thanks to Thomas’ historic efforts, the Mercury knocked off the Sparks in a 92-84 road win on Tuesday night.

Phoenix jumped out to a 24-18 lead after the first quarter. They kept putting a lot of pressure on the Los Angeles defense to make plays against them, which worked in their favor. The visitors were offensive consistent as they scored 20 or more points throughout all four quarters. This proved to be too much for the Sparks to handle, who were unable to make a rally in the fourth quarter.

Perimeter shooting, rebounding and playmaking made the difference in this matchup. Phoenix prevailed in all three categories; they converted 11 of their 25 attempts from three, a sharp accuracy of 44%, while securing 32 rebounds and 28 assists. It wasn’t the same case for Los Angeles; the hosts only knocked down seven of their 24 tries from deep, an underwhelming accuracy of 29.2%, while getting 29 rebounds and 19 assists.

“When we share the ball and have multiple players in double digits, when we’re playing team basketball, taking easy, open shots, we’re really hard to guard. We can’t pick and choose when we want to play like that,” Thomas said postgame via Sports Illustrated’s Chris Harrison.

“We just gotta continue to grind. It’s a long season for a reason.”

Five players scored in double-digits on Phoenix’s behalf, including Thomas. Satou Sabally led the squad in scoring with 19 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. She shot 5-of-11 overall, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. Kahleah Copper came next with 18 points and three assists, while Sami Whitcomb had 17 points and four assists. Meanwhile, DeWanna Bonner provided 14 points and five rebounds.

Phoenix improved to a 23-14 record on the season, holding the third spot of the Western Conference standings. They are one game behind the Las Vegas Aces and seven games behind the Minnesota Lynx. Boasting a solid winning record, they are firmly in the playoff race.

With seven games remaining, the Mercury will prepare for their next matchup, being at home. They host the Chicago Sky on Aug. 28 at 10 p.m. ET.
