Andy Reid Speaks Out On Future With The Chiefs In 2026

The Kansas City Chiefs had easily their most disappointing season in over a decade, easily missing the playoffs – and perhaps more importantly, seeing franchise quarterback and two-time MVP, Patrick Mahomes go down with an ACL tear that could see his return for the 2026 season opener put into question.

One thing that few people were truly having thoughts about came from head coach Andy Reid, who secured the franchise 9 straight AFC West division titles, 10 consecutive playoff berths and three Super Bowl rings since taking over back in 2013.

However, he was asked on Monday about his future with the organization, and he gave a pretty clear – indeed even humorous – answer to his intentions with the franchise moving forward.

“Andy Reid opens with a joke when asked if he’ll be back for his age 68 season in 2026: “I think I’m coming back, right. If they’ll have me back, I’ll come back. You never know in this business, that’s a tough one. But I plan on it, yeah.” Matt Derick of Chiefs Digest reported in a post on X.

Andy Reid Intending to Stay With The Chiefs For Another Year

This is hardly ultra-surprising news for the Chiefs. The 67 year old had not displayed any major signs of wanting out from Kansas City.

Despite a very difficult 2025 season, the Chiefs remain the biggest obstacle for any AFC team looking to compete for a Super Bowl over the next half decade – and perhaps more. Patrick Mahomes; aged just 30; still has a lot of time left in the prime of his powers, and in Steve Spagnuolo Kansas City has the best defensive coordinator in football.

The “if they will have me” comment is clearly meant jokingly, but is perhaps also indicative of the new-age trigger-happy approach to severing ties with even highly accomplished coaches who do through a downturn.

Mike Vrabel was afforded little leeway in Tennessee after two losing seasons – despite having won two division titles in back-to-back seasons in the years prior, and taking the team to an AFC Championship.

But one would imagine that with more stable ownership and a winning culture, the Hunt family would be ultra-reluctant to mess with what has almost entirely been winning formula since Reid’s arrival.

How Much Longer Will Andy Reid Coach In The NFL?

At 67, there are certainly fewer years remaining than have elapsed over the course of the former Philadelphia Eagles head coach’s storied career in the league.

A decade or so ago, mid-to-late 60s was normally the age coaches considered retirement – if not before. But now we have seen the top of the business stay on well past that benchmark. Bill Belichick left the Patriots aged 71 – and has been linked to a return to the league over the past few weeks, whilst Las Vegas Raiders head coach, Pete Carroll, turned 74 in September.

Time works differently depending on the individuals, but it would not be shocking if Reid continues on for the next five years as head coach as him and Mahomes continue to chase history.
