Anonymous Source Gives New Contract Update for Cowboys’ George Pickens

The Dallas Cowboys are running into a situation that they likely didn’t expect to, with George Pickens playing excellent football. When the Cowboys traded for him, the hope was for Pickens to be an above-average player just like he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers throughout the first three years of his career.

However, the University of Georgia product has been better than ever, averaging 16.4 yards per catch and already scoring six touchdowns, the most of his four-year career. Pickens also has 525 yards on just 32 receptions, showing how great he’s been as a big-time threat.

With an upcoming contract situation that has to be figured out, some are starting to wonder how much Pickens could get. According to an anonymous source, per Yahoo! Sports, Pickens could end up landing what Tee Higgins got. Higgins and the Cincinnati Bengals came to an agreement on a four-year, $115 million extension.

“That [Pickens acquisition in May] has really worked, but they need to push it now,” the source said. “It’s going to be hard to pay Pickens what he’ll command in [free agency]. Even if you set aside the personality risks [the Cowboys] would be so top heavy on offense if they paid him. It becomes the Bengals. That got one-dimensional really fast. I think the Pickens’ [negotiation] starts at the Tee Higgins extension, too. … I’m sure there’s an impulse to [maximize] Pickens while they have him for this run and then tackle the contract bridge at the [NFL scouting] combine [in February].”

Should the Cowboys Pay George Pickens?

Giving another wide receiver a ton of money, given the Dallas Cowboys already have CeeDee Lamb locked up, might not be something that Jerry Jones wants to do.

However, he has also admitted that it’s something he has to consider, given how great Pickens has been around the players on the roster. If he really feels that way, it’s possible that he could get creative and try to figure out something that works out for the two of them.

“As you know, that [extension] even has a competition to it and the very aspect of it,” Jones told reporters this week. “He is doing more than we did expect or that we could’ve expected. And what’s really special is that he’s a real plus to have around the team. He’s a real plus around his teammates. He’s a great plus around those coaches, and those coaches really think highly of him.

Could the Cowboys Trade George Pickens?

The idea of trading Pickens has also come up for the Dallas Cowboys, with many suggesting it. The latest to do so was Mike Florio, who wrote that if the Cowboys move on from him now, they might get a decent pick in return.

However, if the Cowboys are in a position to make the playoffs, it’d make absolutely no sense to move on from a player who’s playing as well as Pickens has to start the year.

“Some have suggested that the Cowboys should trade Pickens now, before the deadline. It’s not a crazy thought, given that it will not be easy to keep him. The better approach could be a tag and trade Pickens in early 2026, which would give them Pickens for the balance of the season. And if he finishes strong, Pickens could be worth even more later than he’d fetch when the trade deadline arrives in three weeks,” he wrote.
