Anthony Davis Responds to Weight Criticism Ahead of Mavericks’ Season

By now, most fans have seen the pictures. At Dallas Mavericks’ media day and during the first few days of training camp, something seemed different about Anthony Davis. He got a haircut, sure, but it seemed that something had been added.

Social media went wild, as it was clear that Davis had gained some weight. Fans are yet to get an official measurement. Last season, he played at 253 pounds, which is in line with where he has been for most of his career.

When he was drafted, he weighed in at 221 pounds, although his slender frame was a major concern. Now, it seems fans have the opposite worry.

Anthony Davis Addressed Weight Concerns

After the Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, health and conditioning have become a priority. Nico Harrison cited Doncic’s lack of conditioning as justification for the trade. If Davis had the same problem, the irony would not be lost.

Davis’ official weight for this season is yet to be revealed, although it should be well over the 253 mark, if early pictures are any indication. However, Davis was quick to brush off any concerns.

By the time November comes, I’m usually like 255, 258,” he said at practice on October 1.I never want to come in at my playing weight because then I lose weight during the season, and then I’m too small. I try to go because I lose about 10 to 12 pounds very quickly during camp. I’ve already lost five pounds.”

Davis insisted that he feels great and is running. The only major concern fans should have revolves around his eye, for which he had surgery this summer and will wear goggles during games.

Adding Weight Should Help Dallas Mavericks

After Stephen Curry’s 3-point revolution, the NBA is quickly reverting back to being a big man’s league. Nikola Jokic is one of the best players in the NBA, and he and Joel Embiid both weigh in at over 280 pounds.

For Davis to contain them on defense, adding muscle must be a priority, so it makes sense that he focused on that this summer.

Newer stars, like Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren, are much more slender and mobile. In the open court, Davis (at any weight) simply is not able to keep up with them. Down low, even though he is several inches shorter, he can force Wembanyama and Holmgren off their spots. For Davis, his size is his best defense.

As stars like Doncic and Zion Williamson unveil new physiques, it’s a good reminder to fans that skinnier isn’t always better. Position plays a massive part in the ideal physique for a player.
