Art Rooney II, Steelers Make Strong Commitment With Extension News

Long regarded as one of football’s most storied and illustrious franchises, the Pittsburgh Steelers always make waves whenever they announce news. It’s a foregone conclusion.

On Thursday afternoon, that certainly was the case. Per the team, general manager Omar Khan’s has been signed to a new three-year contract that keeps him in town through at least the 2028 season.

The Steelers’ announcement can be seen below via a post from the team’s official X account.

Art Rooney II & Steelers Proud to Extend Omar Khan’s Contract

The Khan extension comes at a critical time for the Steelers franchise. It also affords everyone some additional stability over the next few seasons. That’s something team president Art Rooney II clearly values, and his relationship with Khan is as strong as ever. This offseason’s new pact is a prime example of that.

Per a statement from a story from the Steelers’ official team website, Rooney appears excited for what’s ahead in Pittsburgh.

“I am excited to announce we have signed Omar to a new three-year contract,” Rooney said on July 3. “Omar and his team have done a great job over the past three years in constructing our roster through the NFL Draft, strategic trades, and free agency. We look forward to continuing that trend that will lead to even more success on the field.”

Khan, who is set to enter his whopping 25th season with the team, expressed his gratitude. His previous contract, which was agreed to in 2022, was a four-year pairing with the Steelers.

Khan’s mission is the same as Rooney’s: win another championship. That’s been the same even dating back to his days as vice president of football and business operations and prior.

“I would like to thank Art Rooney II for his support,” Khan said. “I believe we are building a championship roster and look forward to the 2025 season and beyond as our goals continue to be to bring another Super Bowl to the City of Pittsburgh and our great fans.”

Steelers’ 2025 Performance Will Set Early Tone for Continuation of Khan Era

Since the Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII against the Arizona Cardinals back in 2009, they’ve been looking for ways to replicate that success. Head coach Mike Tomlin still refuses to have losing seasons, although recent years have pushed that to the limit. The 2019 (8-8), 2021 (9-7-1) and 2022 (9-8) campaigns, in particular, cut the line close.

With that said, Pittsburgh is attempting to make a splash after back-to-back 10-7 efforts. They brought in quarterback Aaron Rodgers on a one-year deal, also swapping wideout George Pickens for DK Metcalf this offseason. In June, the Steelers traded safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins and recouped both cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith. Khan is undoubtedly trying to insulate the roster with talent, making it easy for Rooney and company to keep investing in him.

Perhaps Khan’s biggest task, and one that’s ongoing, is finding a way to resolve the contract situation of star pass rusher T.J. Watt. Watt, who has 108 sacks in just eight NFL seasons, is an irreplaceable talent. A predicament like this one is what high-level executives get paid to move past.

For the Steelers’ they’re aiming to accomplish that with everyone – Khan and Rooney at the head of the pack – on the same page.
