Veteran sharpshooter Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors are synonymous with one another, and will be for the rest of basketball lore. However, Ayesha Curry, who met her future husband as a 14-year-old, never imagined that he would make it to the NBA, let alone turn into a global sporting icon.
In a candid interview with Alex Cooper on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Ayesha revealed that she’s still surprised that her high school sweetheart carved out a career in pro basketball, and continues to dominate the sport at the highest level.
“In the beginning, I hated it [the spotlight of being married to an NBA star] so much,” she said. “I, like, did not sign up for that.
“I also always thought, like, I didn’t know that he was gonna end up playing basketball. Like he said, he wanted to be a high school basketball coach. Like I thought I was gonna be like the girl out there getting it. So I didn’t know. ”
Challenges of being a WAG
Ayesha opened up a little more on the scrutiny and the attention she received once Steph Curry became a household name.
“It was so depressing,” she admitted. “And also, it was during that time when this like social media thing was just ramping up, and so people were going wild, just spewing opinions on things that didn’t warrant opinions. And so I think for a while, yeah, I was very critical of myself because of the things that I was seeing.
Ayesha and Steph met as a group of Church-going teenagers when they were 14 and 15, respectively, in 2003, but didn’t start dating until 2008. They would eventually tie the knot in 2011, nearly two years after Curry established himself in the NBA.
Why Steph Declared for NBA Draft
As is well documented, Steph Curry spent three seasons in college, but was undecided about returning to Davidson for a fourth year in 2009. Ayesha recalled the chats she had with her then-boyfriend that led to his entry into the 2009 NBA Draft.
“Yeah. Yeah. So he had, like, a big decision to make because he had a year left,” she recalled about her conversation with Steph in 2009.
“He had senior year left. So like, ‘Do I stay? Do I go?’ And like, I think what a lot of people don’t know is he really, he really thought about it, like, it was like a torment for him. He called me crying behind a tree, like, ‘I don’t know what to do.’ And I’ll stand like 10 toes down on this. It’s not a secret. I was like, ‘Stay at school.’
Even as Stepeh went with his gut, Ayesha eventually accepted his decision.
“That for me was like, ‘Wow, what a blessing. Like, you get to go to college, you get to have an education, like why would you leave?’ So, and then not coming from that sports background and understanding how, like, rare the opportunity he had was, I was like, ‘Yeah, stay at school.’
“But I’m glad he decided to leave, and then he ended up finishing anyway and has gone on to do tremendous, incredible, cool shit that we never thought would happen. So it’s great.”
