Cowboys receiver Jonathan Mingo was making an early impression in Dallas’ preseason game against the Ravens on Saturday when he landed awkwardly after attempting to haul in an errant Joe Milton III pass in the end zone. He limped to the sideline and immediately went into the medical tent. He was ruled out of the game shortly after that.
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys are concerned Mingo suffered an injury to posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his right knee on the play in question. It’s not believed to be season ending at this time, though Mingo could miss at least a few weeks. Cowboys‘ head coach Brian Schottenheimer said in his post-game press conference that Mingo would undergo further testing on Sunday.
Mingo had one catch for 49 yards on four targets in the game before sustaining the injury. The week prior, he was held without a catch on one target.

CeeDee Lamb is the star in Dallas. The former first-round pick is the undisputed star of the Cowboys’ receiving corps, with four-straight 1,000 yard seasons â plus 935 yards as a rookie in 2020. In 2023, he had 135 receptions for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns, though his production took a hit last year due to Cowboys QB Dak Prescott missing the last nine games of the season.
To add more playmaking around Lamb this season, Dallas traded for WR George Pickens from Pittsburgh. The Steelers upgraded over Pickens by acquiring WR D.K. Metcalf this offseason, but the Cowboys wanted Pickens in a WR2 role next to Lamb. He should do just that, thriving in his physical playstyle deep down the field, winning in one-on-one situations.
Rounding out the depth chart in Dallas is Jalen Tolbert and KaVontae Turpin. Tolbert was a third-round pick in 2022 who finally made an impact in his third season, going for 49 catches, 610 yards, and seven touchdowns. Turpin is primarily a return specialist, but he gets some use on offense in gadget and from the slot. Last year he had 31 receptions for 420 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Mingo was going to factor into that rotation behind Lamb and Pickens, though now he needs to get healthy before he can do that. His skillset is quite similar to that of Pickens, providing another outside receiver who can win jump balls down the field.
Jonathan Mingo Poised For Role in Cowboys’ Offense
A former high second-round pick of the Panthers, Mingo never quite found his footing in Carolina. He made an impact as a rookie, with 43 receptions for 418 yards, but fell off in his second year in the league. Between his time in Carolina and Dallas last year, he totaled just 17 catches for 167 yards.
The Cowboys were impressed with Mingo’s camp and considered him a strong candidate for a WR4 or WR5 role, with additional work on special teams, per ESPN. But if Mingo is forced to miss extended time, he may start the year on injured reserve, further complicating the Cowboys’ plans.
