Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold’s Postgame Handshake Turns Heads After Bucs-Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers gave NFL fans one of the best games of the year. Things did not end quite as planned for the Seahawks following a late interception by Sam Darnold.

Yet, Darnold impressed in his duel against Baker Mayfield. It was not exactly a master performance by either defense as the two quarterbacks shined in Week 5.

After the game, Mayfield and Darnold shared a moment following the Bucs’ game-winning field goal. Darnold and Mayfield maintain a close relationship after being teammates together on the Carolina Panthers.

Here’s a look at the NFL’s reaction to the instant classic between Darnold and Mayfield as the two embraced following the must-see game.

Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield Combined for 720 Passing Yards & 6 TDs in the Buccaneers-Seahawks Game

Fans flooded the comments of the NFL’s social media post after the shootout, praising Mayfield and Darnold for the entertaining afternoon. It is worth noting that Seahawks wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Buccaneers rookie Emeka Egbuka were standout performers as well.

“Absolutely ballers,” one person noted.

“What a show!” a fan added.

“Wish I was there live,” another reacted.

“Savages 🏈,” added a fan.

“Easily one of the games of the season,” said another. “I’ll tip my cap to Tampa Bay. They’re going to be a problem for the league this season.”

“So did their star WRs,” a fan pointed out referring to Egbuka and Smith-Njigba.

Baker Mayfield on Sam Darnold: ‘I Knew He Just Needed That Chance’

Darnold threw for 341 yards, four touchdowns and an interception while completing more than 82% of his passes in a losing effort. Mayfield posted 379 passing yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions while completing nearly 88% of his throws.

Neither player was able to have sustained success with the Panthers, but Carolina may be wishing the franchise had either quarterback this season. Leading up to the Bucs-Seahawks game, Mayfield reflected on their friendship as both signal-callers have resurrected their careers since things ended in Carolina.

“Sam and I are really close,” Mayfield noted regarding his relationship with Darnold in the days leading up to the game, per ESPN’s Jenna Laine. “I’m happy for him — from going a couple different places that weren’t great for us to having a good opportunity elsewhere, it’s fun to see.

“I knew he just needed that chance, and he’s thriving now. It’s good to see, but hopefully not this weekend.”

Seahawks QB Sam Darnold on Interception vs. Buccaneers: ‘I Feel Like That Was Bad Quarterback Play’

Unfortunately for Donald, the game ended on a down note as the quarterback threw an interception that led to the Buccaneers‘ game-winning field goal. Donald took the blame for the final sequence after the loss to the Bucs.

“I feel like that was bad quarterback play on that last snap,” Darnold noted on October 5, per Yahoo Sports. “… Felt like I could have changed the protection and been aware of if they’re bringing it to the other side.

“I had a good answer to that side, and I think Tory was open as well on the right side. So I just got to be a lot better there pre-snap.”
