The Chicago Bears were embarrassed in their Week 2 game on Sunday against the Detroit Lions. Losing a game against one of the better teams in the NFL is one thing, but losing 52-21 to a division opponent is unacceptable.Â
The Bears need to be much better moving forward, and if things don’t change soon, questions will only continue to get worse. Many are starting to wonder if Caleb Williams has the it factor to be a star in the league, like many suggested just a few years ago. Unfortunately, Williams hasn’t been great yet, but according to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, it doesn’t sound like Ben Johnson is giving up on him just yet.Â
“I did see significant growth,” Johnson said. “Itâs not perfect yet. Thereâs still a number of plays where our eyes arenât quite in the right position or weâre holding onto the ball just a tick longer than what weâre coaching.Â
“But I did see tremendous growth in terms of going through the progression. There were a few times there where we had to get to number three or four in the read and he was trusting his feet and his footwork and was able to get there. I did think he got better from Week 1 to Week 2. Iâm encouraged by what I saw and Iâm hopeful that weâll continue to see another leap here this week.”
Bears QB Caleb Williams Does Need to Improve
It’s promising to hear that Johnson isn’t showing signs off worry about how Williams looks, and he can take some positives out of the absolutely horrible showing he had on Sunday.Â
Still, the reality of the situation is that if the Chicago Bears don’t get better quarterback play, they’re going to have to go out and try to find another quarterback.Â
The team has been searching for one for a very long time now, but until things change, Williams must answer the many questions that have already been raised. He expects to play better, but at some point, words don’t mean as much as actual play.Â
“I always expect to come out and play well as an offense. That’s the expectation, but it’s not really necessarily surprising or anything like that, [with a] new coach and new offense and all that. [It’s] a bunch of new players and we’re all trying to figure it out together,” he said.
Caleb Williams Is Doing Everything to Improve
If there’s been one issue for Williams throughout the first year and change of his NFL career, it’s the fact that he can’t complete simple passes at times. The Chicago Bears have been hopeful that he can work on those, as Johnson has made many comments about him, but Williams admitted to ESPN prior to the game that things have been frustrating regarding his accuracy, and it’s something that he just has to keep practicing on.Â
“That’s something that we practice on, something that we get after and something that I’m going to keep getting after, keep correcting. Passes that I feel that I typically don’t miss in those moments and situations, especially with some of the passes being what they were and how wide open. You miss and you move on. You correct and you find ways to get better.”
“You did everything up to that point right, and then you miss a pass,” Williams said. “And it’s frustrating.
Accuracy is key in the NFL for any quarterback, so hopefully, Williams figures that out.
