The Chicago Bears are on a winning streak, and the team is 2-2 heading into their very early bye week in the season. The team took down the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys this season, but they fell to the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings, giving them that 2-2 showing.
The Chicago Bears, of course, are a new team this season, because they’re under new head coach Ben Johnson, who hails from the Detroit Lions. While it’s always going to take some time for a new coach to gel with his team, there are high hopes that Johnson and his offensive mastermind can make Chicago a real contender again.
There have also been rumblings that the Lions would really miss Johnson this season, since he has such great play calls and, overall, is a great offensive-minded coach. So, do the Lions miss Johnson? One NFL analyst has his take on the whole thing, and he doesn’t think the Lions are thinking about their ex-offensive coordinator too much these days.
Do the Lions Miss Chicago Bears Coach Ben Johnson?
Power rankings are out for Week 5 of the NFL. In the piece, published on Tuesday, September 30, Ralph Vacchiano says something interesting about Johnson. It popped up in the section when he was talking about the Lions being No. 3 on his rankings.
The Lions grinded out 34 points against a tough Browns defense and have now scored 124 points over their last three games,” he says in the piece. “It doesn’t seem like Detroit is missing former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson much.”
So, there you have it. “It doesn’t seem like Detroit is missing former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson much,” he says.
Now, this is just his opinion, so take it for what it is. What we do know is that the Bears were able to pull off two wins in a row, and Johnson seems to be meshing with quarterback Caleb Williams, so brighter days are hopefully ahead.
Vacchiano also has the Bears at No. 19 on his tally, noting, “I want to like this team more than I do, but it took three Geno Smith interceptions and a blocked field goal for the Bears to barely beat the Raiders on Sunday. It counts, but I want more — particularly from Caleb Williams — before I start to move them up.”
It sounds like Vacchiano is out to get the Bears, right? He can have his opinion, and he’s an expert, but what matters is what happens on the field after the bye week.
More Talk in the NFL for the Chicago Bears
In the NFL’s latest power rankings going into Week 5, out on Tuesday, September 30, Eric Edholm puts the Bears Lions at No. 18. He makes some interesting observations, too.
The Bears enter the bye with two critical victories to pull even at 2-2, thanks to a dramatic field-goal block,” Edholm notes. As thrilling as the win over the Raiders in Vegas was, it also provided plenty of teaching tape. Chicago struggled to stop the run outside of short-yardage situations, while the offense didn’t really move the ball consistently or finish in the red zone (1-for-4).”
He added, “Still, Caleb Williams made some big plays in key spots, and the pass protection held up, even with Maxx Crosby threatening to take over the game early.”
We like hearing about the “big plays” from Williams. Keep them coming, Chicago.
