Bears Could Re-Sign LB After T.J. Edwards’ Latest Injury Setback

The Chicago Bears could re-sign one of their recently released linebackers before Sunday’s home game after the latest injury setback with starter T.J. Edwards.

The Bears have ruled out Edwards against the New York Giants in Week 10 after re-adding him to the injury report this week with hand and hamstring injuries. He had already missed three games with his hamstring injury and will now miss a fourth.

Fortunately for the Bears, a linebacker who recently spent time on their 53-man roster — Carl Jones Jr. — is available once more after officially clearing waivers on Friday. In other words, the Bears can now re-sign him to the practice squad and bolster the depth in their linebacker room even more with Edwards out of the lineup for Sunday’s game.

Carl Jones Jr. Has Played 7 Games for Bears in 2025

The Bears released Jones on Thursday when they activated veteran linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga from injured reserve, a logical move that kept them from housing seven linebackers on their 53-man roster. He has played 117 special teams snaps over seven games this season, though, which could offer value to their reserves with Edwards hurt.

The question is whether the Bears feel they have enough available on special teams, not defense. Jones mostly fulfilled Ogbongbemiga’s special teams role during his time on the Bears’ active roster this season, playing zero snaps of defense in his seven games.

Even with Edwards ruled out, they might not feel that re-signing Jones is a move they need to make with haste. They do have five other linebackers on the active roster, including veteran Tremaine Edmunds, Noah Sewell and rookie Ruben Hyppolite II.

The Bears (5-3) would need to re-sign Jones and elevate him to the game-day roster on Saturday in subsequent roster moves to have him available against the Giants (2-7). He has one of his three allotted practice-squad elevation opportunities left for this season.

T.J. Edwards Underwent Surgery to Fix Broken Hand

Bears head coach Ben Johnson told reporters Friday that Edwards underwent surgery to repair his fractured hand earlier this week, but he added that the 29-year-old starter plans to play with a cast while his hand heals and should not miss time with the injury.

Unfortunately, Edwards is also dealing with a resurgent hamstring issue linked to the one that held him out for three games earlier this season. With those two injuries paired together, it is unclear how much time Edwards could miss in the long run for the Bears.

Edwards missed the end of training camp and three of the Bears’ first four games with his hamstring injury before emerging from Week 5’s bye with a cleaner bill of health. In the four games since his return, though, he has tallied 27 total tackles and three pass breakups, struggling in pass coverage but having a positive impact on the run defense.
