Caleb Williams led the Chicago Bears to a 47–42 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on November 2 — and he made history in the process.
Per the Bears official website, the second-year quarterback became the first player in NFL history with at least 275 passing yards, 50 rushing yards and 20 receiving yards in a game.
Williams went 20-of-34 for 280 yards and three touchdowns through the air, also adding 53 yards on the ground. He even caught two passes for 22 yards — including a two-yard score from wide receiver DJ Moore. It marked the first time in nearly 82 years that a starting quarterback had multiple receptions in a single game, according to NBC 5 Chicago.
Caleb Williams Makes NFL History vs. Bengals in Signature Moment Under Ben Johnson
Head coach Ben Johnson is a huge reason Caleb’s stat line was off the charts against Cincinnati.
The team’s first trick play came in the second quarter, when Moore took a jet-motion pitch and flipped a short pass to Williams in the flat for a touchdown. The Bears’ sideline erupted.
“We call it ‘Hot Potato’,” Williams said about his TD catch after the game. “It looks like you’re ‘hot potato-ing’ the ball around. One to Rome Odunze, one to DJ, then back to me. It was something we’ve been practicing for the last two weeks, and it finally showed up on game day.”
The Bears young QB also delivered a pair of perfectly timed touchdown throws to rookie tight end Colston Loveland, including the 58-yard dagger with .25 seconds left that sealed the victory.
“I knew exactly what coverage he wanted for that play,” Williams said about Loveland’s game-winner. “The whole game we were hunting it. Right before, we were on the sideline speaking, and he (Coach Johnson) said he thought they were going to get that coverage in this moment. It’s awesome playing for a coach like that. I threw a solid ball, the offensive line blocked well, and Colston made a great play.”
A Closer Look at What’s Next for Chicago

Through nine weeks, Williams’ stat line looks increasingly like that of a budding star: 1,916 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and just four interceptions, with another 183 yards and two scores on the ground.
The win pushed Chicago to 5–3 overall, and they’re now tied for second place in the NFC North. Whether the Bears can evolve from a curiosity into a legit contender remains to be seen, but this certainly doesn’t feel like the same ol’ Bears.
“Here’s what I know, is that he threw some touchdowns, he didn’t throw any interceptions, and I thought he used his legs to help us extend drives as well. So, I was pleased with that,” Johnson said about Williams.
Next up for Caleb and company is a Week 10 home game against the 2-7 New York Giants. It’s a winnable game for Chicago, to be sure, but the Bears have given up 30+ points on defense in each of their last two games, so they’ll need to play better on that side of the ball if they want to avoid an upset and keep their rhythm going.
