The Chicago Bears ran the ball down the throats of the Philadelphia Eagles to the tune of 281 total rushing yards in their 24-15 win on Black Friday last week, but they are evidently still tinkering with their options at the running back spot.
According to the team’s transaction wire, the Bears officially re-signed running back Brittain Brown to their practice squad and released linebacker Dominique Hampton in a series of corresponding roster moves announced on Monday, December 1.
Brown — a 2022 seventh-round pick for the Las Vegas Raiders — played in two games for the Bears earlier in the 2025 season, acting as their No. 2 back behind rookie Kyle Monangai in Week 9’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He rushed for 37 yards and his first career NFL touchdown on just five carries in that standout spot performance.
The Bears had waived Brown during the short week ahead of their matchup with the Eagles, needing to clear space for cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon to come off injured reserve and rejoin the 53-man roster.
Given that the Bears had no running backs on their practice squad, though, it seemed likely they would re-sign Brown in the following week if he managed to clear waivers.
The Bears (9-3) will play next when they travel to take on the Green Bay Packers (8-3-1) at Lambeau Field in Week 14 at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday, December 7.
Brittain Brown Returns to No. 3 Role for Bears Offense
While Brown’s return was not guaranteed when the Bears put him on waivers last week, his contributions this season, however minimal, made it relatively likely that Chicago would re-sign him to the practice squad, given their current depth at the position.
The Bears have a stout two-headed rushing attack in veteran D’Andre Swift and the rookie Monangai, who each rushed for at least 125 yards and a touchdown in their statement win over the defending Super Bowl champions. Behind them, though, veteran Travis Homer — who is more of a special teams player — is their only other option on the active roster with Roschon Johnson currently on injured reserve.
Effectively, that makes Brown the Bears’ backup plan at the position, or their No. 3, should another injury strike the position group. He already seized one opportunity last month when Swift missed the game against the Bengals because of an injury. And now that he is back, perhaps he will earn one more chance before the season is over.
Kyle Monangai Looks Like True Draft Gem for Bears
The Bears seem to have found a depth piece they can trust in Brown, but Monangai — the seventh-round rookie gem — has been the bigger revelation for them in 2025.
Monangai has been one of the top-performing backs in the 2025 draft class through the first 13 weeks of the regular season, rushing for the 22nd-most rushing yards (591) in the league and scoring five touchdowns — tied for second-most among rookie backs.
He is just 44 rushing yards behind top-10 pick Ashton Jeanty and has touchdown runs (5 vs. 4) and runs of 20 or more yards (3 vs. 1); however, Monangai also benefits from a much better offensive line than Jeanty. The Raiders have the 24th-best run-block win rate (70%) in the league through 13 weeks, while the Bears are fifth (73%), per ESPN.
No question, though, Monangai has emerged as a meaningful playmaker with lead-back potential for the Bears in the long-term future. And for now, all they need him to do is to continue to work in tandem with Swift and keep the offense moving on the ground.
