Bears Trade Pitch Lands 2,700-Yard Star RB to Replace D’Andre Swift

With the Miami Dolphins off to a rough 0-3 start, the Chicago Bears may have an opportunity to acquire a premium upgrade for their run game.

The Bears are currently ranked the 14th-best run offense in the NFL, but less than 57% of their total rushing yards (340) through the first three games of 2025 have come from their running backs, with veteran D’Andre Swift averaging just 3.5 yards on 42 carries.

Seventh-round rookie running back Kyle Monangai has not been much more efficient in his limited role, averaging just 3.4 yards on 13 carries as their No. 2 rushing option.

While the Bears could choose to stay patient with their running backs, the case for them to make a significant move becomes stronger with each passing week, especially after they got back on track with a 31-14 home victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3.

Perhaps then, if the Dolphins continue to flounder over the next few weeks ahead of the 2025 NFL trade deadline, the Bears could make a play for star rusher De’Von Achane.

Desperate Dolphins Could Part With De’Von Achane

Achane is one of the most gifted offensive playmakers on the Dolphins’ 2025 roster. In the first 31 games of his career, he has amassed more than 2,700 scrimmage yards and scored 25 touchdowns, averaging 5.5  yards per carry and bringing in 123 receptions.

So, why would the Dolphins want to trade him?

For starters, the odds of a fire sale and subsequent comprehensive rebuild are growing for the Dolphins after starting 0-3. Miami’s front office could begin to tear it all down if the team cannot win more than a pair of games over the next five weeks. And while that will likely start with the firing of head coach Mike McDaniel, it could extend to trading away talented players for additional draft capital that can assist in their rebuild.

What makes Achane a potential trade chip is his expiring contract. The Dolphins took him with the No. 84 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, and he has more than done his part to earn a pay raise with his next contract. But if a deep rebuild is coming, the team may not feel a sizable extension for their running back is the best use of their money.

Don’t forget that the Dolphins also have 2024 fourth-round pick Jaylen Wright and sixth-round rookie Ollie Gordon II on their roster to keep their backfield stocked.

If the Dolphins are open to trading Achane, the Bears would have every reason to give them a call. They need more talent in their backfield and could get a jump on replacing Swift — who is signed through 2026 — if they bring Achane into the fold now. They can also clear the necessary cap space to sign him to a worthwhile extension after this year.

Something for the Bears to think about.

Could Bears Target Another RB on Trade Market?

Achane could become an enticing trade option for the Bears if the Dolphins make him available in the coming weeks. But if Achane isn’t on the table, what other options on the market could make sense for Chicago as it tries to improve its 2025 backfield?

Like Achane, there are several other productive running backs who currently playing out the final seasons of their rookie contracts, including Jacksonville’s Travis Etienne Jr., Tampa Bay’s Rachaad White, Atlanta’s Tyler Allgeier and New York’s Breece Hall. Whether any of those teams are willing to trade off those players is unclear, though.

The Jets have also lost three straight to start the season, but Hall has run poorly (2.6 yards per carry) over the past two weeks, which could turn off potential trade suitors. The Falcons, however, have superstar Bijan Robinson in their backfield and might listen to offers for their trusty No. 2, Allgeier, if they have no plans to extend him.

Another, more radical option could be New Orleans Saints veteran Alvin Kamara, but the Bears would face risks with him, too, given his age (30) and expensive contract.
