Ben Johnson Responds to Cringe-Worthy Matt LaFleur Moment

Not everyone gets along in the NFL, and it’s obvious that first-year Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson isn’t a fan of veteran Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. During Johnson’s introductory press conference with the Bears, he famously said that he joined the team because, “To be quite frank with you, I kind of enjoyed beating Matt LaFleur twice a year.”

Well, Ben, Chicago loves you, and you’re already doing great things, but you aren’t beating LaFleur twice this season. The Packers beat the Bears on Sunday, December 7, in a heartbreaking 28-21 loss. The Bears rallied in the second half and should be proud of their showing, but it wasn’t enough to get over the finish line.

But, things are still looking up for Chicago. Quarterback Caleb Williams and the team still have a 9-4 record and 64% chance of making the postseason even after losing to the Packers. Plus, they rallied hard in the second half of the game, showing the NFL world what they’re capable of doing. The Bears tied up the game to a 21-21 score with 8 minutes to go and were within striking distance, but they fell just a bit short.

After the Bears and Packers game, Johnson had, well, an awkward moment with LaFleur. Of course this would be a strange moment. After what Johnson said in his introductory press conference, it makes sense that these two would be uncomfortable shaking hands. Now, Johnson is opening up about the duo’s post-game exchange.

Ben Johnson Talks Matt LaFleur Exchange After Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers Game

On Monday, December 8, Johnson opened up about his post-game handshake with LaFleur. While it was a very short moment and looked uncomfortable, to put it nicely, Johnson promises there was nothing unusual about that moment.

When asked about it, he said, “That feels like every handshake I have at the end of a game.”

Sure, Johnson. We believe you. Maybe. Either way, the Bears put up a good fight against the Packers, and they have a lot of reason to be positive going into the teams’ next game in two weeks.

Chicago Bears Quarterback Caleb Williams Opens Up About Green Bay Packers Game

After the game, Williams also talked about what happened during the showdown. He talked about the good and the band, blaming the team for shooting themselves “in the foot” in the first half but also praising the players for their rally and effords in the second half.

“I think it was more of us shooting ourselves in the foot, and not making the plays and the small details,” Williams said. “That’s something that we spoke about in the locker room before we came back out, is focusing on the small details, doing our job, execution, and then we were able to start getting in the same place. I think we had a couple good plays that made a spark for us, and we started getting going.”

Johnson also praised Williams for what he did to try to pull off the win. “I thought Caleb was doing everything he could,” he said.
