Former NBA player Ben Simmons has yet to return to the NBA, but he is working with the goal of coming back to the court in the future. Simmons had a difficult couple of years before his contract ended with no teams having interest in him during free agency. The Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers both gave up on Simmons after his stints for each team last season.
Simmons has not received any chances to join an NBA roster this season, but Sam Jane of The Athletic reports that he has a unique goal before trying another comeback:
“Before he attempts another comeback, Simmons said he is training in Los Angeles with the goal of becoming ‘bulletproof’ to avoid further setbacks. He also said his shot finally feels good and that he can now take a simple hook shot without any discomfort.”
The term “bulletproof” is interesting since Simmons has been considered a flawed player for his entire time in the NBA. Even during his All-Star seasons, Simmons received criticism for not shooting three-point shots or taking open jumpers. However, Simmons now believes he can work himself back into an NBA job.
Can Ben Simmons Get Another Chance?
The Philadelphia 76ers got the best out of Simmons during his peak seasons in the NBA. Simmons having some high-profile embarrassing moments in the postseason and dealing with the fallout of injuries ruined his career. Previous expectations to become an MVP Award winner fell apart once his offensive flaws stood out.
Simmons getting traded to the Nets led to him struggling to suit up and failing to contribute once healthy. The injuries continued to prevent Simmons from having a real chance of success. Simmons entered free agency hoping to land a contract and a reserve role for an NBA team, but it never came.
History shows that Simmons must work his way back to prove to other teams that he is worth giving a chance. Simmons is still young enough to have a comeback and was once considered a generational talent. Other teams getting hit with injuries could give Simmons a realistic chance to have one more shot in the future.

Fans will take more notice of Simmons’ camp saying he wants to become a bulletproof player before his return. Teams will need to see Simmons work out and perform in private shoot arounds to get a stronger confidence in his future.
No one realistically expects Simmons to reach the point of looking bulletproof on the court. The strong terms likely work against Simmons since it feels like more talking without the proof to back it up. Simmons should take extra time to get his body right before he aggressively tries to get back on the NBA free agent market.
Even if Simmons gets a shot this season or next, it will likely come via a bench role fighting for minutes. Simmons started off getting the young star treatment in the NBA, but he is now on the opposite end of having to fight for every opportunity that comes his way.
