The Cincinnati Bengals, with a 3-7 record, are hanging on for dear life when it comes to their playoff hopes in 2025. If there’s one thing that could get the team rolling as the regular season begins to enter the homestretch, it’s the return of superstar quarterback Joe Burrow.
After suffering a turf toe injury back in Week 2, Burrow has been stuck on the sidelines since then, but he’s been closing in on a return to action as of late. His practice activity has ramped up significantly over the past couple of days, to the point where it now appears as if he has a real chance of playing in Week 12. On Friday, the Bengals revealed Burrow’s official injury designation for the team’s upcoming contest against the New England Patriots.
Bengals List Joe Burrow as Questionable to Play vs. Patriots
After a pair of disappointing seasons where Cincinnati missed out on the playoffs entirely, the team entered the 2025 campaign with a sense of new hope. The front office found a way to keep Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Trey Hendrickson happy when it came to their contract situations, and the assumption was that if these guys could all stay healthy, the Bengals would be a very dangerous team in the AFC again.
Well, as we all know, that hasn’t happened for Cincy. Not only has Burrow missed virtually the entire season, but Hendrickson is dealing with a lingering hip injury that will cause him to miss his fourth game of the season in Week 12. Chase and Higgins have both suited up for every game, but that’s going to change in Week 12, as Chase will be serving a one-game suspension he picked up for spitting at Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey in Week 11.
With Hendrickson and Chase already out for this game, Burrow could be the team’s only hope when it comes to beating New England and salvaging this season. While Burrow has made major strides throughout the week, he is still listed as questionable to play on Sunday on the team’s final injury report before their game.
“Bengals say quarterback Joe Burrow is questionable for Sunday’s game vs. the Patriots,” Adam Schefter of ESPN shared in a post on X.
When will the Bengals Decide if Joe Burrow is Going to Play vs. the Patriots?

Typically, the Bengals could wait all the way up until 90 minutes before kickoff to decide on Burrow’s status. The problem is that Burrow is on injured reserve currently, so if the team intends to play him in Week 12, they will have to activate him from injured reserve by 4 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
If Burrow doesn’t get activated, that obviously means he won’t play in this game, but should he get activated, that would indicate he’s on track to suit up. As a result, Burrow’s status will be worth keeping tabs on over the next 24 hours or so, as his ability (or inability) to play in this game could determine how the rest of Cincy’s 2025 campaign unfolds. Kickoff for this important contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
