After throwing away another big lead in Week 10 to the Chicago Bears, the New York Giants responded by firing head coach Brian Daboll ahead of their Week 11 action. While former offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is filling in as the interim head coach for the time being, one guy who is continually being linked to the Giants‘ head coach opening is North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick.
Before he became the architect of the New England Patriots‘ dynasty, Belichick spent 11 seasons with the Giants, serving as their defensive coordinator for six seasons from 1985 to 1990. Belichick’s affinity for the team isn’t exactly a secret, and while he is coaching in the college ranks for now, initially, he targeted a job in the NFL before landing with North Carolina. With rumors flying around, Belichick decided to address the situation head-on.
Bill Belichick Not Interested in Giants’ Head Coach Opening
Daboll was hired as the Giants’ head coach in 2022 and immediately led the team on a surprise playoff run. Since then, though, the team has regressed drastically under his watch. Daniel Jones, who was the team’s supposed quarterback of the future, completely fell apart, and as a result, rumors about Daboll’s standing with the team have floated around for the past few years.
While New York has talented players like Malik Nabers, Jaxson Dart, and Cam Skattebo at its disposal, they all have struggled with injuries this year. Daboll tried to piece things together to just get himself through the 2025 campaign, but he was unable to do so, meaning someone else will be tasked with building up this team.
Could that guy be Belichick? The Tar Heels leader is arguably the greatest coach in NFL history, and while his tenure with the Patriots didn’t exactly come to a great end, nobody is doubting his football acumen. It would seemingly be a match made in heaven on paper, but Belichick issued a statement on Friday night saying he is not interested in the Giants’ head coach opening.
“I have great respect and genuinely care for the New York Giants organization and both the Mara and Tisch families,” Belichick said in his statement. “The New York Giants played an important role in my life and in my coaching journey. It was a privilege for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach Parcells’ staff for over a decade. However, despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies.
Since arriving in Chapel Hill, my commitment to the UNC Football program has not wavered. We have tremendous support from the university, our alumni, and the entire Carolina community. My focus remains solely on continuing to improve this team, develop our players, and build a program that makes Tar Heel fans proud. We’re on to Wake Forest.”
Should the Giants Make a Push to Hire Bill Belichick as Their Head Coach?

Sure, Belichick has come out and publicly denied his interest the Giants’ opening, but things are rarely ever that simple in the NFL. Belichick’s tenure with North Carolina hasn’t exactly gotten off to a smooth start, and given all his experience in the pros, his style of coaching seems to be a better fit for the NFL.
If New York were to make a hard push for Belichick and give him what he’s looking for, it’d likely be pretty tough for him to ignore the team’s advances. What happens with both Belichick and the Giants, though, will likely depend on how their respective 2025 seasons play out. So even though Belichick crafted this statement, don’t expect the rumors linking him to his former squad to simply disappear overnight.
