Bills Announce Troubling News on QB Josh Allen

After being knocked around in last week’s win over the Cleveland Browns, the Buffalo Bills are giving Josh Allen some extra time to rest.

Allen was forced to leave the first half of the game early, going to the locker room for imaging after hurting his foot on a long sack. The X-rays came back negative and Allen was able to return to the game, but he may be dealing with some lingering issues from the injury.

Josh Allen Sits Out After Painful Injury

The Bills announced that Allen was held out of practice on Tuesday, which was listed as a veteran rest day. Head coach Sean McDermott had warned on Monday that Allen could miss some practice due to the foot injury, but his DNP status on Tuesday shows that he is still dealing with the issue — and could still be impeded for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Allen had already made it clear that he won’t miss the game, telling reporters that he was confident about playing.

“Feels good. Feels good,” Allen said, via ESPN. “Ready to go.”

The Bills quarterback added that he would be feeling pain for a while.

“I mean, still sore,” Allen said. “Walk-through today, so really not practice in general. So yeah … feeling good.”

Allen has played through pain in past seasons. He suffered a broken hand in his non-throwing hand in the season opener last year, playing with a padded glove on the hand the rest of the way.

He also suffered a shoulder injury in the 2023 season that forced him to alter his throwing motion.

The Bills are facing a critical final stretch of the season. Though they already clinched a playoff berth after the Indianapolis Colts lost on Monday Night Football, the Bills still have a chance to win the division if they win one more game than the New England Patriots over the final two games.

Bills Take Loss in Their Quarterback Room

The Bills took a loss to their quarterback room this week, losing third-stringer Shane Buechele to the quarterback-needy Kansas City Chiefs. Buechele had served as a practice squad quarterback on the Chiefs prior to coming to Buffalo, and will now return to serve as the No. 2 in Kansas City after season-ending injuries to Patrick Mahomes and Gardner Minshew.

McDermott said he was happy to see Buechele get an opportunity to join an active roster, and the potential to get into his first NFL game.

“I think more than anything, I’m happy for Shane,” McDermott said, via SI.com.

Buechele had served in a hybrid role with the Bills, serving as an emergency option in case of injuries while also being a player-coach for Allen.

“He and his family, they’ve been with us and done a phenomenal job and have a ton of respect and love and admiration for Shane,” McDermott said.

It’s not clear if the Bills will seek out another quarterback to sign, or play out the final two games of the season with just Allen and backup Mitch Trubisky.
